Andy’s Coming Home
Andy’s Coming Home
Monday, 15th Aug 2011 13:47 by Tim Whelan

We had been in danger of running out of strikers, but thankfully our former player Andy Keogh has now joined us on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers until January.

With the injuries to Becchio and Somma, and Billy Paynter struggling to prove himself at this level, we urgently needed another striker, but salvation has come in the shape of 25-year-old Keogh. And he’s signed in time to be eligible for the Hull game tomorrow night, when he will be needed in the absence of the suspended Max Gradel. Hopefully we’ll see a two man attack and he will take the pressure off Mc.Cormack, who doesn’t seem suited to playing as a lone striker.

Keogh came through the Leeds United academy, but his only first team appearance was for a Carling Cup tie at Portsmouth in 2004.Kevin Blackwell then decided to offload him to Scunthorpe United for £50,000, which looked a rather bad move when the Iron sold him on to Wolves for over ten times that amount. Three years ago Keogh was a key member of the Wolves side that won promotion, but never really established himself in the Premier League.

Last season he was loaned out to Cardiff and Bristol City, but in total he has only scored 53 goals in 198 starts during his career, which isn’t all that impressive. But Simon Grayson still thinks he can do a job in the Championship, as he told the official site “Andy will strengthen our striking options. He's got plenty of experience, having played a lot at this level and in the Premier League. He's also returning to the club where he started his career so he knows what it's like here and understands the place."

Keogh was born in Dublin and has earned 22 caps for the Republic, but again his strike rate isn’t that good, with one solitary goal! But at least we can say that at 6 feet tall he will bring a bit of height to our attack. There’s no indication yet as to whether we have the option to extend his loan beyond January, but that will probably depend on how long it takes the other strikers to recover from injury.
