OMG I can't believe they actually played for mighty Leeds - "G"

Is for Sean Gregan.

A week late due to the holidays, our A-Z of horror reaches "G" and Sean Gregan.

Gregan is one of the few players actually to play in all four professional Divisions. Born in Guisborough, he started his career at Darlington before becoming one of the highly rated stalwarts in David Moyes Midfield when the Young Scottish manager was cutting his teeth at Preston.

Emerging as a no-nonsense defender, Gregan commanded a £2m fee in August 2002 when Premiership newboys West Brom took him to the Hawthorns. The Baggies lasted just one-season in the Prem but roared back in 2003/04 with Gregan captaining the side to glory. However boss Gary Megson accepted an offer from Leeds in September 2004 for an initial downpayment of £500,000 rising to £1m dependant on appearances etc.

Leeds' capture of Gregan was hailed as a coup. He was the man who would grab hold of the tough Championship by the scruff of its neck and lead Leeds back to the promised land. However the Leeds fans were in for a shock.

Looking off the pace and overweight, Gregan was clearly struggling in central midfield and soon became a target for the boo-boys. Probably the lowest point came at home to Leicester in December 2005 when a section of idiots gathered outside the car-park to inform Gregan first-hand what they thought of his admittedly dire display in the defeat to the Foxes. Regretably Gregan's heavily pregnant wife also copped for a bucketload of abuse and the hateful press had another excuse to pen a fresh chapter of woe as far as Leeds supporters were concerned.

Gregan was switched to centre-half and put in several good displays as Leeds made the 2006 play-off final, but lack of pace was clearly an issue and after moving to Oldham on loan - he finally became a Lactics player in January 2007.

After Oldham, Gregan has wound down his career in the non-leagues having a couple of seasons at Fleetwood and having recently joined Cumbrian outfit Kendal Town.

Many Leeds fans who saw him struggle woefully in our midfield would have been convinced he had arrived from non-league footie and not the Premiership.
