Gloucs Houses: Curt's Big Chance

Home > Story Index >Curt's Big Chance

And when I say hidden, I mean those qualities we were all screaming out to see when John Hollins was Swansea City manager. Many believe that Alan Curtis was held back from obvious decision making moves when he was number two to Hollins. As you know I personally regretted every day that Hollins was Swansea manager. Even on the day we were promoted as champions, and the reason was clear, and as will be borne out at Rochdale, he just isn't cut out for the fight. And the real problem was his reluctance to take on board advice, so much so that at times he basically did nothing at all or pondered for so long the opportunity was missed.
Remember the Hollins " This squad is good enough " speeches ? Well, if it was why has he not come back in for some of those " good enough " players to bolster his Rochdale squad ? Well, Curt can extinguish the flames once and for all with a very able Nick Cusack at his side. Nick displays a ruthless streak in him which will be valuable for the clubs immediate future, and Curt, with a real point to prove can reinstate himself as a good manager in the lower league game. They will work tirelessly for The Swans, and alongside Roger Freestone, who will revert back to playing next season, and maybe one other appointment to the coaching side could give us a season to remember.
Many now will be very down after the past nine months, especially when you think it was us that were champions just two seasons ago. That year we failed time and time again to seize upon opportunities by going on the cheap, very cheap. The revelation was of course Andrew Mumford, a player who Curt made all the moves for, andthen Llanelli manager Leighton James put his head on the line to bring Mumford to Swansea too. But that is in the past and the team of Cusack and Curtis can do no worse than Hollins when you look at his repeated failure to bolster our squad when it was crying out for repair and improvement.
Already Nick and Roger are travelling to games to watch potential players in action before the season closes properly, and some quality players who are now available on free transfers are making it known that they wish to come to Swansea. Dean Saunders is one player who could play a final year next season, and he is available at far less than anyone would believe. Basically with an extra 5,000 punters over the whole season coming through the gates his wages would be paid, and this is something you would expect the management committee to be looking at very soon. They must feel awkward with the CVA still in place at the club, but good business management is required now, especially if as we believe that 9 players are due to depart very shortly from a squad that has failed to show real metal this season. Look at Hartlepool, once at the very foot of the league table - now in the play off's, and they are my tip to beat Cheltenham Town over two legs next week. We showed some great desire over Christmas as a team, but after that it really fell apart, and this was a time when even Mel Nurse felt we could reach the play off's. The league table then reflected us only 8 points away from 7th place.
But thankfully the season has closed, and now it's time for Cusack and Curtis to show what they are made of, my feelings are that they won't let us down, and away from the pitch there is a major announcement coming shortly from the management committee. Maybe even on Thursday.
The speculation over Bo Ecklund refuses to go away too. For those that don't know this guy was talking to Doug Sharpe some five years ago, so he is no fly by night prospector. And my gut feeling is that the foundations at Swansea City may be rocked somewhat in the next four weeks if the information we have is correct. In a good way, not bad. And if that goes ahead we will be the first to let you know, for now we are in the dark about the financial future of the club as much as you. And we won't speculate too much until we get the details of what we believe could stand us in good stead for the coming season. Lets put it this way - The councillor talking about glass beadshad better take a reality check beforehe next gets all insular and parochial about Swansea as a City. Glass beads and all, have you ever seen a dog gulp ? That's him next month.
We have come through major upheaval this time around due to poor management and useless business people at the club. People who in the main have left Swansea City AFC. In the coming months we need a brand ! The Swansea brand, and committed people at the club can make that happen. Too many from West Wales are travelling to Cardiff City now, just as they did from East Wales in the early 80's to watch Swansea City. That has to be reversed before the damage is permanent, the footballing people of West Wales need something to believe in, and with a clean slate they can have just that.
As I said last time around the management committee have to show some desire in this field too, it's been 8 days since and little has changed. But the close season is the best time to move things forward, they have the time and the scope to do so. And that doesn't involve discussions over a new ground and pie in the sky announcements for the Morfa project. It needs major surgery from within, and on the pitch. Then with league success maybe we can step forward with plans for a final move.
That starts with Cusack and Curtis on the pitch and some brave decisions off it. There has been no better time to resurrect Swansea City FC. Lewis, Mcclure, Petty and all have left, but sadly the carcass is out in the sun compliments of their time at the club.
But we have that desire, and that fighting spirit. And over the summer we can re build Swansea City, no shirkers, no time wasters. And definitely no bottle jobs. It's not a time for relegating Swansea City to a past time that you " once took part in " It's time to come out fighting.
Because that's the real test for all of us.
Footnote : Last week I spoke of HTV's Soccer Sunday and gave you figures regards their love of showing Cardiff City in lieu of Swansea and Wrexham. This week they delighted in a song sung by Cardiff City fans that went along the lines of " Cheer up, Swansea are worse than you " when Gary Croft scored the winner at Tranmere. And yes, it was the main featured game on HTV, surprise, surprise. The fans I do not blame, that's football. The media I still do,but just remember this - What goes around comes around, and come around it will.
