Brian Flynn stuck with his gameplan of making wholesale changes between the two halves giving us no real clear indication of which eleven players he will select on Saturday to start against Bury. However, he tried new strike combinations of Andy Robinson and Kevin Nugent in the first half and Lee Trundle and James Thomas in the second. And it was certainly the latter one that paid dividends tonight.
The first half of the game was played firmly in Llanelli's half with Roberto Martinez coming the closest to opening the scoring when his submlime free kick found the corner of the net only for the referee to rule that he was not ready to re-commence play and the free kick was re-taken. Leon Britton hit the outside of the post as well but despite Swansea's increased pressure there was no goals at the break with some excellent keeping from the home goalkeeper who was heard to remark after he was replaced during the second half. "They just keep effin battering us"
There was worrying times for Flynn in the first half when he was forced to replace Lee Jenkins with Richard Duffy after Jenkins picked up an injury from a tackle which left him badly limping after the game. Initial reports say that he has a knock on the ankle but the player himself was hopeful that he would be ready to face Bury on Saturday.
The second half was to prove a different matter and within twenty minutes of the re-start, the Swans were 3 goals to the good all thanks to James Thomas. The first was a penalty, awarded for handball on the edge of the area and put away with some ease. The second was easily the best of the night and Lee Trundle reached the byline and placed a cross that was earmarked for Thommo and his header gave the keeper no chance. Another worrying moment as he remained down with a bank injury but after lenghty treatment he resumed.
And he grabbed his hat-trick soon after when Trundle burst into the box before laying the ball for Coates who crossed and Thomas found the net with an overhead kick from close range.
At this stage Thomas looked very goal hungry as he had also hit the outside of the post with a delicate curling left footed shot and his partnership with Trundle looks as if it could bear massive benefits in the season ahead.
A late goal from Andy Robinson was no more than Swansea deserved and a successful pre-season finished with 5 wins in 6 games and plenty of goals to go wit those wins - Thomas alone grabbing 7 during that period. I would imagine that Brian Flynn has seen plenty of things that made him smile during that period and will be rubbing his hands at the thought of the damage that some of his players could inflict this season.
That part is over and now on with the serious business of the season from here on in but 1500+ fans tonight, many of them Swans fans, went hme happy with what they had seen and all turning their thoughts to the next 46 games that lie ahead.
