Saints V Birmingham The Verdict
Saints V Birmingham The Verdict
Sunday, 17th Aug 2008 10:02

A second game Saints should really have got a point out of.

A game of two halves, the first in which Saints played some glorious football and went in with a half time lead and the second in which they should have been two up but conceded two sloppy goals to lose the game.

Of course there are plenty of plusses to be taken from the game, but the fact is plusses wont get up up the table and its time for Saints to start getting some points.

Jan Poortvliet made one change from the starting line up at Cardiff, switching McGoldrick to midfield and putting Stern John up front, I found this slightly strange, lets be blunt McGoldrick is a forward and one that is in a rich scoring vein, so why move him to midfield ? it cant have been of benefit to the youngster and it sends out the wrong message to the team, in short players should be picked in their position on merit, if they are good enough to get in then they should play.

It also beggars a qustion about Nathan Dyer, it seems that he is only third choice on the right side of midfield behind both McGoldrick and Thomson and strangely he wasnt even on the bench.

The bench was another strange choice by the head coach, the four outfield players included two untried defenders in Joseph Mills and Oliver Lancashire, Jake Thomson and Paul Wotton, Thomson apart no real attacking options.

That of course left us a little short as we chased the game late on, although Poortvliet only used one substitute, it does seem  he doesnt like to tinker, but in the three competitive games so far he has used a sub only once in the last two and on this occasion having taken off Stern John five minutes earlier, when Brum took the lead, he had no real options on the bench to try and get the goal back.

That being the case Saints never really looked like getting back into the game.

This defeat should not start the alarm bells ringing just yet, there was enough out there to suggest that Saints can win a few games an pull up into mid table, however one thing is clear, we do need to improve the squad with a little bit of experience, at the moment we know we have a small squad, that being the case we have to use it  a little better.
