Players Pay Tributes

Swansea City players have joined in the tributes to Hartlepool wingers Michael Maidens who died in a car crash on Friday evening.

Yesterday's league clash against Maidens club - Hartlepool - was called off yesterday morning when news of the tragedy filtered through to South Wales.

Swans winger Tom Butler had previously played with Maidens at Hartlepool and he said "I played with Michael and I am struggling to come to terms with the news

"He trained with the first team every day and he had a very bright future ahead of him.

"I've spoken to some of the Hartlepool players and they are all very upset by what's happened and when they were told of the accident a lot of them were in tears.

"It would have been inconceivable to have gone ahead with the game in the circumstances."

The words were echoed by club captain Garry Monk "On behalf of all the players our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family and friends at what must be a very difficult time."

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said "It's understood this vehicle was travelling in convoy with a group of others, driven by friends. This vehicle was the last in line.

"As the car negotiated the slip road directly off the roundabout it lost control and spun in the road and collided with metal posts, causing serious damage to the car on the passenger side. The impact caused fatal injuries to the front seat passenger."
