Leon Britton has admitted his surprise at his contact negotiations being made public

The Swansea City midfielder was the subject of media reports last week regards his new contract after manager Paulo Sousa revealed that they had stalled over what was described as a "club record deal"

It was rumoured/reported that Britton was stalling on a £12k per week deal to extend his Liberty Stadium stay because he was looking to move closer to London to be nearer his daughter.

But Britton is surprised that the club took the decision to make the talks public and told the Western Mail “I am surprised and disappointed that the nature of my contract talks have been made public

“My advisor has been talking with the club since mid-September in what have been amicable and productive discussions.

“At the last round of talks it was agreed that all further discussions would be postponed until the end of the season so that I can focus on my performances for the club.

“I remain 100 per cent committed to Swansea City FC as my eight seasons here have proved,” he declared.

“And I will continue to give 100 per cent in every game I play between now and the end of the season with the ultimate aim of getting the club to the Premiership.

“Any further discussion regarding my contract will be resumed at the end of the season as agreed."

Chairman Huw Jenkins said on the subject “We accept that every player has the right to make a decision in his best interest when he comes to the end of a contract

“If he wants his agent to find other options from January onwards, we appreciate that is his right.

“But we still expect Leon to be fully focused and committed to Swansea.”

As to whether Britton could be sold in January, Jenkins added: “I think Leon is fully aware that we want him here until the summer no matter what.

“We will wait and see what happens in January because if someone comes and offers £10m for him I’d be mad to say we won’t consider it.”
