Heats' on Hockaday as Leeds scrape to Spirerite draw
Sunday, 27th Jul 2014 21:50

Our disappointing pre-season continues with a draw at Chesterfield.

Leeds' countdown to the new season reached Chesterfield and the whites' were thankful for Rudy Austin's prowess from the penalty spot as the Jamaican international gave the whites' the lead and spared our blushes as the Spirites' stormed to a 2-1 lead.

Worryingly striker Steve Morison was barracked by a section of the travelling fans who accused the former Norwich and Millwall man of "not trying" as he was subbed late on.

After the game, head-coach David Hockaday denied that effort was a problem but admitted our defence was still a worry-arguably the same thing has cost the last three Leeds bosses their jobs.

Leeds seem to be very open in their business of late, with owner a Massimo Cellino assuring fans another 5 or 6 new signings will be coming through the door as a budget of £15m has been earmarked for squad rebuilding.

Leeds have so far made five new summer signings and yesterday only one, keeper Marco Silvestre started at the Pro-Act Stadium. Before kick-off the starting XI was dubbed as the most likely to start at Millwall in just under a fortnight.

On Tuesday night Leeds were humiliated 2-0 by Chesterfield's bitter-rivals Mansfield Town, a performance which many United fans took to social media to accuse Hockasay and his assistant Junior Lewis of standing on the touch line looking totally bewildered and out of their depth.

Talented AS Roma youngster Frederico Viviani was in the stands at Field Mill apparently on the verge of joining us on a season long- loan but the abject performance apparently had the midfielder heading home to consider other offers. This drew a angry riposte from Cellino who announced the deal was dead before the Chesterfield game however the players' agent has responded with surprised and claimed further talks are due on Monday.

I've tried to remain rational and calm during the close season but I'm joining the growing band of dissidents who feel that we are slumbering towards yet another season of mid table mediocrity in 2014/15.
