Ben wants to Bury his sidelines spell

Ben Chorley is pushing for a return to Pompey's team after nearly two months out.

The skipper last played against Newport on August 30, and has missed out since because of a dead leg and then a calf problem.

Chorley was due to play for the reserves against Cambridge at the University of Portsmouth on Tuesday but it was rained off. But he did get the benefit of an intensive training session.

Boss Andy Awford told The News they had to call the reserve game off because the pitch was not playable. But he added: 'Instead, Ben had a good 90 minutes on the artificial surface, so I don’t think it has knocked him back. It was an intense session and he completed that without any reactions.

‘Of course, you can’t ever replicate the intensity of a game situation. I would probably have preferred him to play in the match, rather than a training session. But I don’t think it has delayed him too much in terms of getting back into the first team. I’m hoping that he should be in contention for Bury this weekend.’

Chorley may not walk straight back into the team - Paul Robinson and Joe Devera have been doing well in the heart of defence, although Awford could play Chorley as well as those two if he going with a 3-5-2 formation.
