Monk Confirms Michu On His Way

There was no real surprise when Garry Monk confirmed that Michu would not be with the Swans squad this coming season as he paved the way for his departure from the Liberty Stadium.

The departure of Michu probably seemed madness had it been discussed two years ago but it shows what a fickle beast the game of football can be that our leading star of 2012/13 has fallen so far from grace

When he lit up the Premier League that season it made the £2m that the Swans paid for him look a pittance which in fairness it was as he tore apart Premier League defences and helped earn the Swans our one and only major trophy to date.

We held onto him that summer and when he started to score goals in the Europa League - including one on that famous night in the Mestalla - the world was almost hos oyster as he won his first and only cap for Spain who were then of course both champions of the World and of Europe.

But then it started to go all wrong as Michu got injuries and rumours started to surface that all was not well in the relationship between Michael Laudrup and the club. And when the manager went that increased rumours that Michu would be off and he was loaned to Napoli last season where his injuries continued and football was minimal.

He didn't return to Swansea for pre-season training and stories surfaced of clubs interested in his services and now it has been confirmed that his time in Swansea is up so it is now up to the club and the player to come to an agreement for the end of his contract.

"I spoke to him at this point last season, he wanted to go and felt that was right for him and I was happy to support him in that decision. I now think we have kind of moved on as a squad. We had a big transition last year," said Garry Monk.

"I haven't spoken to him – there has been some difficulty with the numbers.

"I have let Huw (Jenkins) deal with his agent and that side of things.

"From what we hear from their side, I think Michu would like to try to move somewhere else.

"That's the impression I get although I haven't had that conversation with him.

"He won't be with the squad this year."
