G.M's Match Preview: Rams Need To Get Going By Beating Boro
Tuesday, 18th Aug 2015 07:05 by George Martin

Despite a good performance against a well organised, defensive and resolute Charlton, Derby are still winless, but they will hope to put this right against promotion rivals Middlesbrough.

Charlton set up shop on Saturday and despite most the possession Derby found it difficult to get a clear opening in the 1st half. Good skill and cut back by Ince did allow Martin the chance to give Derby the lead but he miss-timed his shot and watched it screw wide of the far post.

Charlton took the lead after a deflected shot looped over Carton and Derby deservedly equalised after good work by the impressive Hanson found Martin to control, swivel and slot the ball into the bottom corner. A well taken goal.

Derby pushed for a winner but Charlton still looked dangerous on the break. Weimann nearly got it after he came on for the ineffective Russell and Martin saw a flashing header pushed over by the Charlton keeper after successive Derby corners.

Christie also gave Derby more attacking intent and width from right back and Derby were close to getting a winner. Charlton made some great blocks and were happy with the point. On another day Derby would have won the game based on possession, attacking play and opportunities created.

Tonight the Rams entertain Boro in what should be an interesting battle as both teams have made their intentions clear by signing players for millions of pounds in the summer.

Derby could remain unchanged but there will be an injury doubt over Thorne after he needlessly went into a crunching tackle towards the end of the game. He later tweeted he was winded, but I have never known anyone to be limping when they are winded.

Carson and the back 4 should be the same and the midfield 3 of Thorne, Hendrick and Hanson will be the same if they are all fit. If the very impressive Thorne does not make the game then Baird will go into midfield and Christie will come in at right back. Weimann could come in on the wing for Russell. Fans seem to love Russell but for me he has no end product.

Boro have made a good start to the season and remain unbeaten after drawing away with Preston, beating Oldham in the cup and demolishing Bolton in the opening half hour on Saturday. In that game, Fabbrini, Kike and Downing were very impressive.

Boro are solid at the back and now possess the attacking qualities and options to create chances and score goals. They have added Fabbrini to their squad as well as spending money on Downing and Nugent.

Derby's midfield and defence will have to be tight and give nothing away. It will be a very difficult game for Derby and the season needs to get going. This game could kick start it.

Enjoy the game. It is likely to be a tight one with a good atmosphere.

Prediction: I'm going to play safe with this prediction and go for a 2-2 draw with Ince to bag one.
