Derby County Interested In Harrison Reed
Tuesday, 18th Aug 2015 13:27

Derby County are apparently interested in taking Saints midfielder Harrison Reed to the iPro Stadium or whatever its called these days.

According to the latest media report Derby County are interested in taking Harrison Reed on a season long loan from Saints.

Reed is highly rated at St Mary's but so far has been unable to force his way into the side on a regular basis and the arrival of both Jordy Clasie and Oriol Romeu is likely to push him further down the pecking order in a crowded central midfield.

Reed is seen as a deep lying midfielder and with Wanyama, Clasie & Romeu ahead of him in the pecking order for this effectively two positions and Steven Davis also able to play the role if needed, it could be that Saints see a loan spell as a good way for Reed to pick up further paying experience which he is unlikely to get this season at St Mary's.

Reed of course would be probably disappointed to go but will know he needs to get more game time this season if he is to make the next jump at St Mary's into being a true first team regular.

At the moment there is a slight blockge in the stream of youngsters coming through in that Saints have jumped up a level in terms of where they are and some of the youngsters like Reed are caught in the middle where they are not quite developed enough to make tht jump, so Saints need to buy in experience and then perhaps loan some of the kids out to get vital competitive experience at a good level.

Would be a shame if he does not get playing time with Saints this season. He is one player who RK has underrated and I think he is a better player than Ward-Prowse.

Thought we could have done with Reed on Saturday. Sometimes a little more passion and a little less ability is what you need. I can’t help but think that a midfield with Reed would have been harder for Everton to bypass

I'm still on the fence with Reed and to a certain extent WP. I think you're correct Nick in stating that they are not quite of the grade to make the jump full time. I'm sure a season of playing an important role in a top Championship team will do wonders for, confidence, physique and experience. Morgan Schneiderlin has said that his time in the lower leagues made him the player he is today.

I think one of the problems they both face, is that they are trying too hard to impress, instead of relaxing and playing their own game.

If you think of it all of our recent young stars to depart, served their time in the lower leagues where they got to play regularly, Ox, Walcott, Bale, Lallana, it didn't do them any harm.

I don't think the problem is the youth getting blocked from first team.

At any one time 2-3 youth players will be in and around the 1st 11, the fact is that some of the best young players moved on very young so there is a gap in age; the current top 19-22 yo players are thinned out, whilst the new batch, 17-19 yo, are still developing.
Jwp is well involved with the first team, just slightly out due to lack of preseason, targett is starting atm. Reed could probably do with some first team action elsewhere, but it may be that he (and Gallagher for that matter) may never make it.

I think we're guilty of expecting too much too early from our young players. Bale, Walcott, and Ox were exceptional talents early on and it was clear they were destined for great things (if they could stay fit).
Other young players are slow-burners and take time to be great. I'd put JWP and Reed in this latter category. I don't know if they'll be good or great players, and I think it's too early for anyone to call.
The other thing to note is that JWP and Reed play in very difficult positions that require concentration and game time - two things young players don't often have in bundles. Schneiderlin took a few seasons to get good so we should expect the same of these two. Neither Reed nor JWP are blessed with pace but have a great pass (esp JWP) and good awareness - two rare qualities in young players.

Man U have a mythical Academy that once produced a group of truly excellent players after which much was expected but nothing was ever delivered. Now no ex-Academy players are in their first team starting line up.

The truth is likely to be that both struck it lucky for a very short period of time when a golden generation just happened to pass through their hands.

No Magic recipe sadly just the laws of probability.

Reed needs to go to Derby, Koeman won't give him a look in at Saints. I don't think Koeman rates him. He's had plenty of chances to play him and rarely does for more than 10 minutes. Reed needs games to improve and Derby are a decent side so if he can get in their team and do well then it will do him a world of good.
As for JWP. He needs to deliver this season. He needs to add goals and assists to his game or he will fade into the Championship. 1 goal in 75 games for us isn't good enough for an attack minded midfielder.

There's play and there's play. Davis can't play the deep-lying role as shown in the last two games. It's unfortunate that Koeman doesn't rate Reed; calling him "not strong technically" and playing Toby in the midfield over him last season.

I'd be very surprised if Koeman doesn't revert back to a 4-3-3 to shore things up, in which case Reed does has a decent chance of making the first team. With (hopefully) more European games around the corner it would be madness to let him go on loan.

I reckon Reed is probably the best of the current crop of home grown players, but it is clear that RK won t pick him ahead of Clasie or Romeu, let alone Wanyama. We now have better players ahead of the kids, and they may have to go down to the Championship to prove themselves. If they are good enough, they will be welcome back.

Whether RK really rates him or not I think he would be unwise to let him out on loan because we might need him because of the extra games this season

I am beginning to think that we are simply buying too many players. But somehow we always need more. It’s a sign that our 1rst 11 isn’t strong enough. If we had a higher quality 11 but less depth Reed and JWP would get opportunities.

We had a vision once that 5 out of 11 first teamers would be from the academy and that players would predominantly be from the UK and therefore have a connection to the fans.

We started with 1 Englishman on Saturday (Target) and Jay-Rod and JWP cam on for 20 and 10mins respectively

We were exceptional, we have become ordinary
