Evans is safe…till the end of the season

The latest is that Cellino will allow Steve Evans to see out his current contract, but he has also made an approach to Fabio Cannavaro.

Another day, another set of claims and counter-claims on the likelihood of Leeds United parring company with Steve Evans. Il Presidente told Sky Sports this morning “I won’t make any changes until the end of the season. Then I will look at how the whole season went and make a decision. I’m not considering replacements.”

“I’m a very sad man with the results this season but sometimes I’m not happy with my wife and I don’t divorce her, so I’m certainly not looking to replace Steve Evans at the moment.” And it’s a good job Cellino doesn’t have the same attitude to women as he does to head coaches, else the marriage guidance councillors in Italy would be kept very busy.

But while he denies that Evans could be on the way, other news outlets are reporting that there was something of a players’ revolt after the capitulation against Huddersfield. It’s said that several players approached Cellino after the game and told the Italian that they have lost confidence in the manager.

And Gazzetta World are claiming that representatives of the club met Fabio Cannavaro yesterday, to ask the Italian if he would be interested in replacing Evans at Elland Road. But the paper added that two clubs in the Middle East are also interested in hiring the former World Cup winning captain.

And while it’s unlikely that Cannavaro’s next appointment will be his dream job of managing the Italian national side, another suggestion is that Fabio Capello could replace the Chelsea-bound Antonio Conte in that role, and choose Cannavaro as his assistant. Cannavaro may well regard that as his next best option, with the possibility of moving up to manage the national side at some point in the future.

Intriguingly the Gazzetta piece also briefly mentions that a Middle Eastern consortium are interested in buying the club. They don’t give any details and I’ve not heard this story from any other source, so hopefully they haven’t just got confused by googling an old article about GFH. But although our last spell of middle-eastern ownership didn’t go well, if this is true it could give us a way out of the chaos of the Cellino era.

As usual, nothing is clear about the future of Leeds United, but we live in interesting times.
