Saints Chasing Wolves Youngster
Monday, 25th Apr 2016 08:51

Saints have joined several other Premier League clubs including West Ham United and Crystal Palace in the race for a highly rated defender.

Saints are being linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dominic Iorfa. although according to africanfootball.com they will face competition from at least two other Premier League clubs.

Iorfa who will turn 21 in June is the son of a Nigerian player of the same name who plied his trade in England for a period in the 90's playing for well over a dozen lower league and non league clubs with Iorfa Jnr being born in Southend during his fathers time there.

It was the Essex club's youth system he joined as a youngster before heading off to Wolverhampton'a academy at the age of 15.

He has been at Wolves since then although he did have a loan spell at Shrewsbury Town at the end of the 2013/14 season.

Last season having broken into the team midway through the season he held his place and this season has continued as a regular winning two England U21 caps in the process.

At 6ft 4 inches tall you would expect Iorfa to be a central defender and he has played there of late for Wolves, but mainly he has played as a right back showing the kind of versatility that Saints look for in a player these days.

He has already signed a long term deal back in November for the Black Country club who rate him highly and will be looking for a decent fee for his services.

Seems like a good prospect. I'd love Saints to sign a promising young centre back (similar to Stones signing for Everton) to learn from, and provide decent back up and long term potential replacement of Fonte and Van Dijk. Van Dijk is (in my opinion) as good as Alderweireld - the two best CBs to have played at Saints since Claus and Killer. Iorfa seems like a good mould for this young CB.

Also feel McCarthy could have a long term future at St Mary's - he's looking great on his loan, and being honest Cedric and Martina, whilst sometimes looking impressive going forward, have hardly set the world alight this season. Thoughts?

There seems to be some sort of "issue" with Cedric he is clearly heads above Martina yet has been overlooked several times this season after decent games in the side

Not sure Ron rates either, the way he keeps chopping and changing them. They both in the main do a decent job but if we have serious ambitions of top six R/B is a position which needs strengthening. If we think we can get another good season out of Jose, and nobody departs unexpectedly, the big one I think should be a creative midfielder. Might need to 'dig deep' though.

If he's that tall he might be a Chambers 'lookalike'? Praps not quite.

Chambers would do a job for us. He is a better player than he has looked this season. Arsenal have ruined him, as usual.

A quality new RB makes more sense than a dozen new strikers. We raised Clyne from promising youngster to England international so with the right material why shouldn't we do it again. If Iorfa is any good and he does join us make sure he signs for 5 years and not 3 as his second season will likely be a good one and we don't want home to leave as soon as he comes good..
