Saints Again Linked With Haller
Monday, 22nd Aug 2016 08:53

Saints are again being linked with Utrecht striker Sebastien Haller with Newcastle also being believed to be in hot pursuit.

Saints were linked with French striker Sebastien Haller earlier in the summer, although how much of this is due to the fact that we now have a French manager and it is easy headlines to link him with every promising French talent is open for debate.

Newcastle are being reported as trying to advance talks with Utrecht for the 6ft 2 striker who since joining the Dutch Club initially on loan from Auxerre has hit 32 goals in 57 Eridivisie games including 2 in the opening 3 games of this season.

How much Utrecht would want for the player is not clear although it is believed that the price quoted in the January transfer window cooled both Sunderland & Norwich City's interest.

It looks like the transfer window is starting to move for Saints, it will only take one deal happening and there could be a little flurry of moves both in and out.

As much as I would like Jay Rod to be back in the team realistically isn't going to happen. Sadly he needs game time under a different style of play to get anywhere near match fit. It would therefore make sense for Saints to sign a player like Haller as a replacement and, as I've said in a previous post, a genuine attacking midfielder like Nicolae Stanciu from Bucharest.

I can't help but think now that after showing so much initial promise, by tying down a number of senior players, that this is going to have been a summer of huge disappointment, followed by a very mediocre season. It takes pains me to say it, but I actually felt more optimistic after the mass exit of 2014. At least then we brought in some hungry, exciting players. That's not meant to be disrespectful to Hojbjerg or Redmond, both who I was very pleased to have signed, but we still seem to be desperately short of attack-minded players. I can't help but feel we could have had another hour against Man U without troubling De Gea. We literally have just over a week to sort this out. A huge bank balance will get minimum interest and nil points.
