New Signing Can Boost Ticket Sales
Friday, 26th Jan 2018 08:15

Saints fans have been in low spirits of late, but there is a sign of life with a new club record signing that could spark a boost in ticket sales.

Reading social media of late you would think that there was nothing positive at all about Southampton Football Club with some claiming that new majority shareholder Gao would just pocket the bulk of the £75 million for Virgil Van Dijk and that his interest in the club was nothing more than trying to make a profit.

Well the same accusations were levelled on several occasions at Katharina Liebherr, who showed that if she was in it just to make a fast buck she was doing something seriously wrong by continually reinvesting money from sales in replacements.

That seems to be the same now as Saints splash out around £19.5 million for Guido Carrillo and look set to make at least one more signing of a similar if not bigger figure.

That could trigger ticket sales fro two important games coming up where sales are somewhat slow for both of them.

The first game against Watford was always going to be a poor gate, even given the cheap price, but with the signing of Carrillo it could spark a late burst of enthusiasm amongst Saints supporters and push the attendance up a bit, especially as it is also a chance to get a good cup run going and perhaps make this a season with a bit of interest.

Stranger though is the poor sales for the visit of Brighton on Wednesday, this is a very important game for the club, a true relegation six pointer and if Saints can register their first win in two months then it will take them out of the bottom three and give a big confidence boost.

You would therefore hope that Saints fans would put their gripes away and get behind the team in it's hour of need, but the answer is that they haven't yet.

A look at the ticket section of the Club's official website shows that there ar eplenty of tickets available in most areas and there could be as many as three thousand tickets going spare for what is a massive game.

Hopefully the opportunity to see our new signing in his Premier League debut will help to reignite the enthusiasm of some, indeed remind them that supporting a football club should be through thick and thin.

Many have been moaning that Saints would not spend money, that has not proved to be the case, the club have proved they are ready to re invest in the team, some fans have to show that they too are ready to reinvest their faith in the club.

I think you’re getting ahead of yourself nick. As things currently stand the club has made a profit on transfers of £55 million in this window.

I went to buy two tickets to Watford on Saturday, but as I could only buy one per member number I couldnt. It's a ridiculous system. Not everybody can be members for god sake. So rather than jump through hoops they can stick it.

Had the same problem as bjwg in the past .... you would think that the box office would be more lenient if fans are willing to travel from Stoke to Southampton - a many a mile round trip.

Bjwg ..you don't have to be a member mate just to have a customer number. Register a couple of mates or family so they have there own number, then you can get extra tickets. It cost nothing

ali, if you want to be pessemistic, negative and pedantic, the club would probably have netted only around £60 million of the actual transfer fee after the sell on fee to Celtic has been paid as well as agents fees, so the fact is we are nearer £40 million in profit at the moment.

So when you moan that the club hasnt reinvested all the £75 million then you need to take these things into consideration.

Some Saints supporters need to start being positive to backing the club to help it, not hinder it by constant criticism, there will be plenty of time for that when the season is ended.

Perhaps if Reedy had tied up the 3 new players required (inc AM) in even 10 times the time it took to sell VvD, people would feel like buying tickets. Reedy has left it so late that we have lost at least 6 points this month which could cost us our Prem status.

Do you think that Reed is delibrately waiting to the last week ? Do you not think that he would rather sign players early so his own job is a lot safer ? This is the january window there has barely been a dozen transfers done in it that have cost significant money

He seems to leave it until the last week in every window to buy, but seems to speed up quite a bit when he's selling or loaning out. I think his job has been guaranteed by Kat in the new Gao contract. She stated that Reed and Kruger's positions would be protected in any sale of the club. Maybe I'm wrong but this was what was written.

I wasn’t moaning that the club hasn’t reinvested the full £75m, indeed we would be foolish to in the January transfer window. I was merely pointing out that one signing doesn’t prove anything, the board need to back it up with one or two more.

And for the record, I and many others were saying this time last year that we needed more firepower, does that make us pessimistic or realists?

We need AM's desperately. It's no good having isolated strikers, look at Gabbi he looks like he'd rather be anywhere than on the pitch at the moment because he gets no service which makes him look bad. If we bought 2 quality AM's, Sigurdsson style, Sam/Oli/Gabbi/Tadic would be scoring goals, we wouldn't be talking strikers.
No service - no chances - no goals. What I can see happening is Carrillo being left up the front, their defenders roughing him up, and still no goals. Hope I'm wrong.
