Leeds United: Young midfielder leaves for France

Madger Gomes becomes Leeds United's first departure of the summer...

Leeds United have today confirmed that Madger Gomes has departed Elland Road for FC Sochaux-Montbeliard.

Alicante-born Gomes, who began his career with Villarreal in his native Spain, joined the Whites on a free transfer from Liverpool last summer, but he leaves having failed to make even a single league appearance for the club.

The 21-year-old's start to life at United augured well. After featuring in several pre-season friendlies as a member of the first team, Gomes was accorded his competitive debut in August 2017, coming on as a second half substitute in Leeds' 4-1 rout of Port Vale in the Carabao Cup. This was followed by a first start against Newport County in the same competition - but Gomes would not feature in the first team again.

The news of the youngster's departure has therefore not arisen as a surprise, and the move to Sochaux, who compete in France's Ligue 2, presents to him the chance to reinvigorate his career by playing regular football.

United are understood to have received an undisclosed fee for the player's services.
