Alex McCarthy To Sign New Deal !
Wednesday, 27th Jun 2018 16:18

According to The Daily Telegraph's Jeremy Wilson Alex McCarthy has already put pen to paper on a new deal at St Mary's.

Although these days Jeremy Wilson ply's his trade in the national football media, at one time he was a Daily Echo journalist and close to the club.

He maintains those links and when he comments on Southampton Football Club you can usually be sure that his sources are very close to the heart of St Mary's.

WIlson has reacted to the news that Dusan Tadic will join Ajax by suggesting that the club have already agreed a fee with FA Basel for Mohamed Elyounoussi to make him their second highest ever signing as replacement for the Serbian. He suggests that the deal will be announced by the end of the week, meaning it could be close to completion

But interestingly in the same article he also reveals that Alex McCarthy has already signed a contract extension to his deal due to expire next summer and that the club will be announcing this very shortly.

This will be good new for Saints supporters who voted McCarthy their player of the year, but it also means that Saints themselves are listening to the supporters gripes about a lack of information from St Mary's.

Whilst not many football clubs put out too many direct stories about anything not completely done and dusted, they do use trusted journalists to get over their point and it seems that this is the case today, Wilson would not put out information like this unless he had received it directly from a good source and that the club were happy for him to put it in the public domain.

If he had put out pure speculation it would soon mean he would be frozen out by the club, so it seems that the Phoney Transfer window is about to come to an end and that the club have been quietly getting on with what is now looking like a major revamp of the playing squad.

How Alex didn't make Russia is beyond me. His form once he played for us was outstanding and, but for Alex, we would have been relegated. That says it all.

Calm, calm - all ye of little faith. After all that transfer talk about Alex becoming the next Liverpool keeper (well not this year anyway)...he seemed well-pleased with his new deal (even if he'll get a fiver less than Forster).

However, the "rumour" of Saints' interest in (£15 million) Gunn from Man.City could suggest there is a plan B in Fraser Forster's career. Early days yet though. we'll have to wait on this one.

Great outcome - McCarthy is an infinitely better keeper than FF - I wish Forster well but he needs to move on, and the person, presumably Les who gave he and Ward-Prowse extended contracts really needs to be brought to account.

to perazi..
I think that Fraser was playing quite well at the time he was given a contract extension -and to be fair to him - some of the goals conceded on his watch could better be classified as "defensive errors" not goalkeeping mistakes..BUT, I'm still a firm McCarthy fan anyway .
We tend to forget that Ward-Prowse has been with the club since he was in first school, and made his Prem. debut aged 17...and is still only 23. If we were to sign a 23 year old for the first team sqaud now, lots of people would say --" he's a bit young isn't he"?

The main problem is that he has never had the chance to establish himself in his best role (whatever that is ) and has always been understudy to far more experienced players.
I think he still has potential to be developed, but if Mark Hughes ignores him for longer periods , he may have to be patient a while longer unless he moves on for good.

This is great news on one of the most important positions in a football team.
Thanks Alex and good luck. Keep it up. We love You :-)
