Southend bring a different type of test as Pompey aim to grind out another win
Friday, 7th Dec 2018 10:51 by pompey-fans.com staff

Another Saturday, another day for asking: Can Pompey continue to disappoint their chasers and maintain their form? The Blues have become relentless in recent weeks as they stay top and make progress in cup competitions - but their rivals remain close on their heels.

Pompey head into a Fratton Park clash with Southend four points clear of second-placed Sunderland and six ahead of Luton and Peterborough, who are third and fourth.

Kenny Jackett knows one defeat will lift the chasing pack, but then we have been saying that for some weeks and it's not happened in that time.

You have to go back to October 6 to find the last time - and the only time so far - Pompey lost a League One game, at home to Gillingham, and October 27 for the last dropped points, those in a 1-1 draw at Accrington.

Southend at home, on paper, doesn't look as big a test as some Pompey have passed in recent weeks but that in itself makes it dangerous. The team from the Essex seaside tend to win or lose - with only two draws to their name from 20 league games - and they did chalk up three straight away wins before losing their past three on the road.

Jackett has been analysing Southend's strengths and weaknesses and told the Pompey website: 'They have not scored too many goals and not conceded too many either, so they’ve been quite consistent in that sense.

'I think they’re more than good enough to compete in this division and have a strong squad — now their challenge is to transform into a top six side. It’s a different type of challenge for us, but it’s the most important game of the season because it’s our next one.'
