Leeds sell young defender to divisional rivals

A young full-back has become the latest player to depart Elland Road in this transfer window.

Leeds United have sold left-back Tom Pearce to fellow Championship side Wigan Athletic.

The 21-year-old joined Leeds in 2014 following his release from Everton, and broke into the first team under Paul Heckingbottom's management as the 2017-18 season neared its conclusion.

He impressed in this spell and made five appearances and netted his first professional goal in a 2-1 home win over Barnsley. Thereafter United rewarded him with a lucrative four-year contract.

But the England under-21 international struggled for appearances following Marcelo Bielsa's arrival last summer, and spent the second half of last season on loan at Scunthorpe, for whom he made nine appearances as the Lincolnshire outfit succumbed to relegation from League One.

His move to Wigan has come as no surprise given the recent emergence of Leif Davis and the presence of Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas.

Pearce has signed a three-year contract at the DW Stadium with Leeds receiving a fee in the region of £250,000 in consequence of the deal.
