So how do you follow on from Bielsa?

Jesse Marsch has been speaking about his time at Elland Road....again!

Chatting to Four-Four-Two magazine, Marsch reflected on the difficulty he faced replaving a club legend like Marcelo Bielsa, who'd enjoyed unprecedented success during a glorious four-year spell at Elland Road prior to his sacking in February 2022.

The humble Argentine was revered on the terraces, but after ⁵a run of big defeats and with Leeds deep in relegation trouble, the board turned to the brash, confident American.

It was a big challenge,” Marsh admitted. "I had always coached teams that were higher in the food chain, instead of lower down, but I made some strong relationships within the community and the club. I learned a lot – there were challenges, from a leadership and a football perspective.”

Marsch managed to avoid the dreaded drop with a dramatic win at Brentford on the last day of the season, but he'd face the future without two key figures as Raphiniha and Kalvin Phillips who's sales raked in £100m. However incoming signings like Marc Roca, Rasmus Kristensen and Luis Sinisterra struggled to adapt to life in England.

By October, Marsch was a dead-man walking according to many, with the 2022/23 mid-season break to accomodate the Qatar World Cup looming, Leeds were expected to look for a new head coach. However an unexpected win at Liverpool followed by a win over Bournemouth and a spirited defeat at Spurs bought the fiormer RB Leipzig coach a stay of execution.

However the struggles resumed and Marsch left at the end of January 2023. Leeds unsuccesfully courted Arne Slot and Andre Iraola before settling on Javier Gracia and then Sam Allardyce but a three-year stint back in the top-flight came crashing to an end.

Marsch still believes he would have kept Leeds up, he said "I do believe we would have stayed up and thenontinued on a good path – it was a shame that the club gave up on it, then paid the price".

Personally I don't dislike Marsch, inspite of his bizarre Mother Teresa quotes, abandonment of wide play and lets face it, whoever replaced Bielsa was going to have their work cut-out. However im yet to be convinced he was worthy of a job so "low down on the food chain". He also had Victor Orta in charge of recruitment! He has since got Canada to the World Cup finals albeit on the strength of them being co-hosts so we will see how good he really is then!
