Homophobic chanters face lengthy ER ban Monday, 18th May 2026 18:56 Leeds have vowed to ban any fan found to have engaged in homophobic chanting for a "lengthy period", following yesterday's late win over Brighton. In a statement on the club website, Leeds said they would be checking camera footage for evidence of offenders and they will receive "lengthy bans" from the stadium. Culprits may also get a knock on the door from the police as I believe such songs are now outlawed under the catch-all Public Order Act 1986 which criminalises statements that are deemed offensive. The chants have been directed at Brighton fans for many, many years, largely due to Brighton's reputation of being a gay-friendly town. Indeed it isn't the first time Leeds have been involved in such controversies. Only last month 13 Leeds fans were reported for similar chants directed at Chelsea supporters during the FA Cup semi-final. And who could forget El Hadji Diouf's goal celebration directed at the Brighton fans on the last game of the 12/13 season when the Senegalese international appeared to grab his crotch in front of the travelling fans? Diouf was sent-off, fined rwo-weeks wages and never played for us again. Leeds however did acknowledge they are also aware of "Jimmy Saville" chants. I could hear the Brighton fans giving it large about the serial sex-offender just 3-4 minutes after kick-off. The club are keen to have singing about Leeds-born Saville categorised as "tragedy chants", something I personally do support! Yes I know plenty will say its just banter and wokeness gone mad etc but is it really worth risking a ban particularly as we appear to be on the dawn on an exciting new-era for the football club?
