Lowy: "Three year Farke plan" as Starmer gives approval
Wednesday, 20th May 2026 15:54

LUFC board member Peter Lowy has revealed the club want to sit down with Daniel Farke and discuss a three-year plan. Meanwhile PM Sir Keir Starmer has indicated his approval for the ground expansion transport-plans.

Having returned us to the Premier League, secured our place for next season and taken us to an FA Cup semi-final, Daniel Farke announced last week that with just a year left on his contract he would be seeking assurances re the clubs future ambitions before deciding his own future.

There was a common opinion from the so-called expert that Farke fell into the gap being too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League. Much of that came from his Norwich City days where twice he took the Canaries up but they came straight back down again.

Now Farke's stock has risen after surviving a difficult start to the current season and his message is clear for next-season, ambition must take precedence over avoiding relegation again.

Our majority shareholders, the 49ers Enterprises are notoriously guarded when it comes to speaking publicly on speculation regarding the manager. They kept quiet last November when the knives were out for Farke and a year ago, despite winning the Championship with 100 points the club did nothing for two-whole weeks to dampen speculation that the German was set to leave Elland Road.

However board-member and investor Peter Lowy appears to have broken the silence and told The Athletic that a new "three year plan" needs to be discussed with Farke imminiently, as the current "four year plan" has been achieved in just three years.

The Australian is a lifelong Leeds fans and his family are behind the Westfield shopping centres that have sprung up all over the country in recent times.

No doubt Lowy will be eyeing up business opportunites re the much anticipated expansion of Elland Road, which appears to be well underway with the backing of Leeds City Council and Lowy revealed that a Memorandum Of Understanding has alsp been signed re installing trams at Elland Road with West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin. His company are willing to invest in the redevelopment of the area surrounding the famous old stadium.

Before Sunday's 1-0 win over Brighton, I noticed some building work had started in the car park behind the Kop, as well as some floodlight struts appearing atop of the current West Stand - which im assuming shall replace the two big floodlights in each corner of the main car-parkm? These were put in six years ago when Marcelo Bielsa's team were promoted as our old ones didn't meet the required standards of the Premier League - although ive never worked out why they need to be switched on when a game is played on a sunny afternoon? It doesn't strike me as being very environmentally friendly?

The issue of the trams raises a good point, apparently a new transport hub is planned for the area which from both a convenience and Green perspective surely will be a forward step. In his book "The Football Grounds of England and Wales" Simon Inglis mused how he couldn't understand why Elland Road hadn't been used for more big occasions? Like FA Cup semi-finals, due to its excellent road-links, however this was writen over 40 years ago and it can be a nightmare getting away by car on a matchday particularly following an afternoon kick-off.

No doubt when we return in August, there will be lots more building work completed and ongoing. Tne West Stand is scheduled to be finished in just two years time with the north side completed two years later in 2030, this will give us a 53000 capacity up from the current 37645.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, who's Leeds West and Pudsey constiuency isn't far away has praised the redevelopment plans. Mayor Tracy Brabin has also revealed that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is a fan, of the trams if not LUFC as he is, no doubt, a very hapoy Arsenal fan given their title-win on Tuesday.

Going back to Daniel Farke, hopefully he will last a lot longer in his current job than Starmer does in his!
