The Magnificent 7
The Magnificent 7

Isnt it about time the Saints Number 7 Shirt became special.

The installation of Ricky Lambert in the number 7 shirt is a timely reminder of the greats that have graced the shirt and hopefully Lambert will be the latest in a long line.

Perhaps the first great wearer of the 7 was Terry Paine and although the shirt was passed around a little after his departure it had perhaps its most famous incumbent in 1980 when Kevin Keegan pulled it on, although sadly the shirt he was wearing could hardly be described as stripes.

But then came the most beloved of all the 7’s Im referring of course to Matt Le Tissier, indeed after his retirement in 2002 there were calls for the shirt to be retired, but the arrival of Kevin Phillips seemed a good time to fill it again, although in truth it did not turn out to be the best two years in that number.

Now we have Ricky Lambert and all signs are that he could be a worthy addition to the magnificent 7.

So isn’t it about time that some sort of honour was attached to the wearing of the number for Saints, of course the first thought would be to retire the shirt and perhaps have some wall of fame at the ground, however retiring it is perhaps now not an option now that Lambert has been honoured with the number, so what could the club and its supporters do.

Well firstly there should be some sort of honours board where everyone could see it, a wall of fame honouring those that pull on the number 7 shirt, it should be an honour to do so, think of the number 9 at Newcastle and you think of the greats who have graced it, we should push our greatest number to the fore.

With that in mind why not rename the Dell Cafe Bar, Number 7 and create a display there.

On top of that another idea put to me was that perhaps the theme tune to the Magnificent Seven could be broadcast over the tannoy every time the wearer scores, certainly this would create an atmosphere in the ground with the supporters joining in ( The Clash’s Magnificent 7 could also be considered) initially I thought this might be a bit contrived, but a quick round robin revealed that actually this was quite a popular idea.

So come on Saints, the pride is coming back to being a Saints supporter, we seem to have a board that is prepared to recognise our past and respect it whilst looking to the future, so let’s see the club encourage this new culture of pride, anything that the fans together and behind the team has to be good.

So what’s the view of you the supporters, perhaps you could let me have your views and ideas and Ill put them to the club via the Saints Trust.
