Captain Ben Chorley says Pompey's second-half showing at Exeter can give them heart for the unfolding seson ahead of them.

As the Blues prepare to welcome Peterborough to Fratton in the League Cup on Tuesday night, the defender felt there was much encouragement to be had in the way they battled back from being a goal down after a weak first-half display.

Chorley told the Pompey website: 'It’s the first game of the season and I’ve been in football long enough to know there are no easy ones. I’ve played here a few times at League One and League Two level and it’s always a difficult place to come.

'You don’t win the league on the opening day and I think it’s probably a point gained rather than two dropped. I think we can be relatively happy. We wouldn’t have been happy to take a point before the game, but we had to fight back after going one behind.

'We didn’t play too badly in the first half, but it felt like we were still playing a friendly game. We were still getting on the ball, but we were giving it away too many times and the tempo wasn’t high enough.

'There were some opportunities, but they were half-hearted and we needed to step on the gas a bit. The manager said at half-time that if we believed then we would get back in the game. I think that our performance in the second half bodes well for the remainder of the season.'
