Robbo rescues point but Pompey can't build a run

Gary Roberts rescued a point for Pompey at Yeovil but it was another frustrating afternoon for Paul Cook's side as they failed to build on last week's win over Bristol Rovers.

Pompey had Christian Burgess sent off after Francois Zoko had put the Glovers ahead - before Roberts popped up to at least salvage a point.

Plenty of other promotion contenders won but Oxford lost again and third place looks anybody's.

Not surprisingly, Cook went with the same starting line-up as the one that had put Rovers to the sword. But Conor Chaplin was an injured absentee from the bench.

From the word go, it was a scrappy affair, not helped by poor weather conditions and a pitch that left a bit to be desired.

Kyle Bennett was Pompey's liveliest player for much of the first half and spurned a couple of half chances.

Yeovil defender Connor Roberts was upsetting Pompey with challenges on Bennett and then Michael Smith and was lucky to escape a yellow card.

Burgess almost put through his own goal a few minutes before the break but recovered to clear the danger after he had deflected Liam Walsh's shot.

Gareth Evans picked up a knock and had to be replaced by Ben Tollitt just before half-time.

Glovers keeper Artur Krysiak pulled off an excellent save to deny Roberts early in the second half. Ben Close also went close from long range.

Zoko sounded a warning to Pompey when going through and being thwarted by the outrushing Ryan Fulton but after Marc McNulty had replaced Bennett, Zoko put Yeovil ahead on 75 minutes when he bundled in after a Walsh corner.

Things looked even bleaker for Pompey when Burgess was booked twice within a minute and was ordered off - starting to trot off the pitch before the red had been shown.

But if some thought this was now a lost cause, Roberts had other ideas and salvaged a point with a fine low shot inside the area.

So it was a point more than they might have got - but three would have been preferrable. It puts the pressure on for a win at Barnet on Tuesday night and at home to Cambridge next Saturday.
