| News Comment | Alex McCarthy Or Joe Lumley That Is The Question For Russell Martin at 09:25:54
Think now he's had a few days to set the team up, I'm expecting Lumley. Much better with his feet which suits the chosen style of play. Take your point on people ignoring all the good work Bazunu does to focus on the negatives. If you watch him during games his footwork and positioning for cover is superb. However virtually every team is missing supposedly key players at this point in the season. |
| News Comment | Saints Announce New Season Ticket Details- Good For Some A Kick In The Teeth For Others at 09:17:49
TBF prices were going to go up anyway. Not sure the idea that because prices rise in some parts of the ground those fans are subsidising fans in others. Tickets have several prices based on where you sit and what age you are now. All in favour of as much safe standing as possible. These days I need something to lean on now and again! |
| News Comment | What Brought About Russell Martin U Turns Against Preston at 14:03:17
Personally I think Bazunu getting injured had a lot to do with it. Wanted an experienced keeper, so McCarthy over Lumley. Then a settled defence in front so the famous 5 get reassembled. The disadvantage of McCarthy is as we saw last night, he's not great with his feet. That means that there is going to be less playing around at the back. Shea Charles looked great last night. Just hope he gets to alternate with Flynn. McCarthy was a pretty good keeper for us, until his near post disasters crept in. Bazunu's inexperience seems to give up the odd goal through poor positioning, wrong choices etc So McCarthy doesn't have to be perfect to be a good enough replacement. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Preston North End The Preview at 12:40:10
In defence of Brooks, while he seemed to fade out of the game, he did get an assist against Watford. I thought Manning played well on Saturday. Agree that Bednarek should start. Stephens is an odd one, while he makes a lot of mistakes - own goal on Saturday really - he seems to be favoured by a lot of our managers so he must add something to the team that we just can't see from the stands. Dunno. Agree we almost certainly need to win all 6 games to be in with a shout of getting in the top 2. So tonight is a must win. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton V Watford The Verdict at 13:44:41
Fair report. Agree that we still don't game manage and just keep doing the same things over and over. Must be possible to have a plan B. At worst the winner was karma for the Watford handball goal back in 2018. To give him his due, I thought Manning did well yesterday. Really don't see why Stephens stayed on or why he started if Bednarek was fit. Still a win is a win. If it gets other teams looking over their shoulder then fair enough. Really think we'll be in the playoffs tho. But that's out of our hands. Just hope we can do a deal for Downes. COYR |
| News Comment | Can Southampton Expect Any Help from Elsewhere This Weekend at 07:22:46
Everyone at the top is in indifferent form ATM. I agree with SaintMark, we are playoff bound, unless we win all 6. That's highly unlikely given our current form, but I just can't help myself thinking we still have a chance. Wish I could see sense! COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton At Blackburn Rovers The Verdict at 10:35:19
I like Jack Stephens but as you say he's a squad player these days. We gained lots of points when he wasn't part of the team due to injury and we have squandered lots of points since he has been back. He's not the sole reason for our woes, we also really need strikers to be more clinical. Russell clearly values Jack's 'leadership' on the pitch. However if you had been part of a winning team and suddenly someone who wasn't is in and shouting at everyone, wouldn't that demotivate/niggle you? Russell claims he is steadfast in his approach and won't change things and then often does. Just hope he can do the same as we near the knockout stages. Really should get back to the players that were successfully round pegs in round holes just 2 months ago. Do that and the weight will be lifted from some players shoulders. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton At Ipswich The Verdict at 13:25:16
Don't really understand the tinkering. We had a solid defence when we played Bree, THB, JB and KWP. All those players were available yesterday so not sure why JS, who wasn't part of our winning run, needed to be shoved in? I suspect as an ex CB Russell sees something of himself in him. Our real problem though was again the lack of a clinical finish in front of goal. Just like Boro we had the chances to win it but just didn't take them. After last years appalling season, I would have taken a play off spot this year. However we need to be aiming to still win our way there, not drift in off the back of poor results. COYR |
| News Comment | Russell Martin Must Stop Shoehorning Jack Stephens Into The Saints Side at 13:11:21
I'm OK with Stephens being given some time in the side. Particularly as very soon Bednarek could be out for 2 games. However, when they are all fit/available, if we aren't playing Bree, JB, THB and KWP as our first choice defence then I think we aren't playing our strongest side. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Preston North End The Preview at 12:49:25
Think Stephens will stay in. Just listen to the post game interviews, Martin loves him. He particularly seems to praise Jack's attitude. Seems harsh to not have Aribo start. He's particularly good at holding the ball. As you say tough game but we need to win to stay in the race. Got to be there to capitalise on any dropped points from the 3 teams above. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton At Liverpool The Preview at 13:34:12
Hopefully Sulemana will play and switch it on again like he did against Leeds. I imagine a lot of our team will be mentally putting themselves in the 'shop window' so you just never know. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton V Hull City The Verdict at 06:46:25
2 duff games in the past 4 months. I think RM deserves some slack given what he inherited. At the start of the season if you had offered the playoffs I would have taken it. The first half performance was not great. The team put out didn't work. Agree that we should have stuck with the team that played well on Friday. Hull really went for it and our passing style just broke down. Bazunu clearly needed another option rather than repeatedly distributing the ball to Smallbone who passed it straight back. Manning and Edozie didn't work well together, Coyle was a constant threat. Second half we stuttered into life. The one bright spot was Aribo. Think he has earned a starting spot. I don't mind a wobble but it needs to happen now, so that we can carry good form into the playoffs. We still have to play all the top 3 so no point getting too bent out of shape now. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton Promotion Campaign Will Go To The Wire at 17:10:25
The final game of the season being away at Leeds seems fairly ominous. Nothing we can really do except rather obviously try to get as many points as possible from the remaining games. Although it must be difficult to stay totally focussed. I suspect this where Leeds may have an advantage as Farke has been through promotion before while Russell Martin is in new territory. COYR |
| News Comment | Southampton V Huddersfield Town The Verdict at 07:58:21
Just a really enjoyable game of football to watch. Huddersfield went for it in the first half. Got in our faces left their feet in. Scored 2 similar goals. Second half we really went for it.Huddersfield still wouldn't give up though. They only really seemed to go off the boil in extra time. 13 minutes was crazy, way too long. Didn't really have an opinion on Rothwell up until now but those were 2 sweet strikes. Thought Sulemana had his best game for us so far. Skillful and good end product. Mara looks like a far more natural finisher than Adams or Armstrong. I really think he needs a run in the starting 11. Great days entertainment. COYR Finally |
| News Comment | Who Are Southampton's Promotion Rivals Playing At The Weekend at 14:09:28
Difficult not to take notice of what other teams are doing but all Saints can really do is maximise the points taken from our own games. Having said that I'm sure there will soon be a few mind games played in the media by ex Leeds players. Hopefully Russ can rise above it. Gary Lineker can do one as well if we start eating into the gap with Leicester lol. |
