Saints At Tranmere The Preview

When you are on the path to glory you have to keep walking.

Saints head to the Wirral peninsuila looking to win at Prenton Park for only the second time in their history on their seventh trip.

For those Saints supporters that like to look for good omens, that one win came in season 59/60 when we beat them 4-2 on our way to the Division Three title.

But its this year that now counts and whilst the top half of league 1 remains so compact with little room for dropping points, Saints just have to keep winning games, nothing more nothing less, keep doing it and we will go up altomatically, fail to do it on a very regular basis and the play offs is all we can hope for.

However this is the time when Saints can really put their foot on the gas, as the fixture list gets congested our rivals will start to feel the squeeze in that a key player missing is a big loss, for us not so much so.

I would expect Adam Lallana to be missing from the starting line up tomorrow, but that shouldnt be a loss in that if we have Chamberlain & Puncheon wide, that is still a lot lot better than any other team in this division can put out, our problem isnt the quality or even quantity we have at our disposal, its making them perform.

However if Nigel Adkins wants to really go for it, he does have the option of putting Guly out wide and Lambert & Barnard up front.

From a Tranmere point of view they are just above the relegation zone, only goal difference of 2 keeps them above Yeovil and they have a lot to play for, especially as Yeovil will fancy their chances at home to Rochdale, however we have to turn the screws on Rovers as they are in that positition for a reason and with respect to them it is becausse they arent as good as others.

Their home form is fairly even, won 4 drawn 3 lost 5, scored 15 conceded 19, that shows us that attacking wise they arent great, and defensively not much better, but they do have the ability to pull the odd performance out of the hat every now and then, a little bit like last season where they lost almost as many as they won at home, but in those home victories were second half of the season wins against Champions Norwich, Promoted Millwall and ourselves, they might not be a great side but they have the ability to raise their game on certain occasions, I would also add that at the same time as they were beating us etc they also lost heavily at home to Leeds and Huddersfield.

So Saints should go North with respect for the opposition, but no fear, if we remain tight and take our chances then there is no reason why we should not win and with some clubs in the top 10 playing each other, there is no reason why we should not make further gains on some of them.

As I have mentioned a few weeks back our first step is to secure a play off spot, we have started to do that with a six point gain on sixth, but we have to make sure we dont let that slip, the next job is to get into second for more than just a week, by the end of February it would be a fair target to be in at least second and preferably at least four points ahead of third
