Better Than Toshack's Class Of '78??

Back in 1978/1979 we were on the verge of great things. We had been promoted the season before from the basement and were facing a return to the third tier of English football. The fixture lists had ensured a season finale against Chesterfield and we had a young manager in charge who had played at the highest level.

Seeing and hearing a comparison? Good. Now, for the record I think it a pointless exercise to compare players or teams from that long ago as we are in different eras and football had different demands. Drawing a comparison between Robbie James and Robbie Martinez - pointless. Between Tosh and Bayo - pointless. Between Trundle and Curt - pointless. You are getting the gist.

However, what is interesting is to have a look at the league records of the two respective sides. The two sides were neck and neck before the 11th game of the season with 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. However, whilst Lee Trundle was securing another win for the Swans at Bournemouth in match 11, Toshack's side were losing 2-1 at Chesterfield. Jackett's men are a win up after 11 games.

It is no indicator of end of season success - merely a yardstick with which we can compare ourselves to the last time we left this division in the right direction.

In addition to these facts, it was pointed out on the message board this morning that this is the first season for over 50 years in which we have scored in the opening 11 games of the league season. Quite an achievement and one that the team should be extremely proud of.

I have the feeling that we are on the verge of something very exciting at this moment in time and whilst I don't believe that we will quite achieve what Toshack did (promotion to the top flight) to be dreaming that a return to the Championship is on the cards so soon after nearly being no more, it is a great feeling

And long may it continue
