An Interview With Tim Samuels
Thursday, 24th Apr 2014 10:48

Tim Samuels is a British documentary filmmaker and broadcaster. He was behind the legendary documentary The Zimmers where he helped a bunch of OAP's storm the pop charts. He has tackled many issues from mass immigration to the plight of Britain's war veterans. Of course Tim is also a City fan! This is what Tim had to say to us here at Not In My Lifetime.

Hi Tim. Thanks for joining us! So how did you become a City fan?

I had no choice. My dad sat me on his lap before the 1981 Cup Final and said this is your team. I was six and couldn't argue. It had been passed down through the generations.

I believe you live in London now. Do you manage to get back to Manchester for many games?

Not as many as I'd like to. I tend to watch with other exiled Mancs down here - though strangely it's been hard to get any United fans to come to the pub lately...

What is your all time favourite City Memory?

My first ever game at Maine Road was pretty unforgettable. It was the final match of the 1983 season when we needed a point against Luton to stay up, failed miserably, David Pleat ran on the pitch in his slippers and there was a mini riot. Seeing us relegated at my first game kind of set the tone for the next couple of decades till all that money appeared.

Did you harbour any dreams of being a footballer?

I was the second XI goalkeeper for my school team till I was about 13 - when the dawning realisation kicked in that I was never going to be the next Joe Corrigan, and there were better things to do on a Saturday morning than stand between the sticks on rainy Manchester pitch getting shouted at for missing the ball.

Do you have an all time favourite City player?

I used to have a number 4 sewn on the back of my shirt in honour of Kevin Bond - though I have no idea why I liked him! Some of my favourites over the years were Paul Simpson, Kinki and Jim Melrose (also for no fathomable reason).

And who is your favourite current player?

There are so many to choose from these days. But, on a puerile level, I like the fact that whenever Javi Garcia plays it's a reminder of how ugly the United team is - they look like a gurning contest.

Do you think money is ruining football. Ticket prices have been talked about a lot lately and also the re-arranging of fixtures for TV?

Football has become a different beast to the days when I was a kid. It has lost its innocence and become a professionalised commodity. The standard of football has no doubt improved, and you run less risk of being poisoned by a pie, but some character has been lost in the process.

How did you feel when Mancini's reign came to end? Do you think it was the right time for a change?

I'd have kept him on for longer. We achieved great things under Mancini and I'd have given him more time to see his vision through. Considering where we were no so long ago - scrambling to get out of the third tier - I don't mind if we have to wait to crack Europe.

Manuel Pellegrini.....Do you think he is the right man for the job?

It's certainly less of soap opera under him - he's brought a peace and stability to the club. And the early season goal-scoring spree was quite something. His scarf-wearing needs improvement though.

Will this season be seen as a failure if we come away with just the League Cup?

For me, no. I'm still grateful that we're not going to penalties against Gillingham. We moved forward in Europe and our success isn't in isolation to what other teams are doing - and Liverpool's season has been beyond expectation.

You have had a great career so far. What has been the highlight?

Kind of you to say so! The highlight for me was breaking a bunch of lonely old people into the pop charts - as The Zimmers - and seeing them take the US by storm. It was so rewarding on every level - from upstaging George Clooney on the Jay Leno show, to them remaining a tight-knit group of mates after.

How do you feel about being compared to Michael Moore?

Would you describe yourself as a proud Northerner?

I guess so - although I've lived down south for years now, there's a certain ease and humour when you meet another Northerner. There's something in the water up there.

And finally...Who do you think will lift the Premier League title this year?

Oh man, I think it'll come down to Liverpool's bottle and David Silva's ankle...

Thanks Tim!!
