City Slip To Penalty Defeat
Thursday, 31st Jul 2014 16:41

City played out a thrilling contest at the Yankee Stadium, with Liverpool just edging home on penalties. The game attracted a huge crowd of 49,653. 1,000 more than attended any of the Yankees games last season.

The first half passed with neither side able to penetrate the others defence but the second half sprung to life when Montenegrin international Stevan Jovetic continued his blistering summer form with the opening goal in the 53rd minute. Jovetic forced home Jesus Navas' cross before before Jordan Henderson equalised with a fine curling shot into the top corner after the ball ran loose in the area.

Jovetic again got on the score sheet in the 67th minute. His brace and his stunning pre-season form will surely be pleasing for Pellegrini.

Liverpool made sure the contest went to penalties when Raheem Sterling side-footed the equaliser.

Henderson, Lucas Leiva and Emre Can all scored for the Reds in the shootout while Jesus Navas, Yaya Toure and Aleksander Kolarov all failed to even hit the target.
