Saints Injury News Ahead Of The Visit Of Arsenal
Thursday, 14th Apr 2022 13:37

Ralph Hasenhuttl has been giving the media an update on the injury issues for Saturday's sell out game against the Gunners, find out here who is going to be fit and who may miss the game.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has been giving his press conference ahead of the game against Arsenal at St Mary's and has confirmed that there are no fresh injury concerns.

Lyanco and Alex McCarthy have taken part in their second week of training and seemingly have no issues and the question there is whether he will use either of them in the squad on Saturday.

There seems to be a non injury issue with Jan Bednarek after the Polish defenders failure to play against Manchester City and it could be that after the debacle against Chelsea that Lyanco is slotted in at the back.

With Fraser Forster in fine form it is unlikely that McCarthy will start the game, but he could return on the bench in the place of Willy Caballero after a four month lay off.

Here is what Ralph had to say:

“Up until yesterday everybody was fit, today we have one or two smaller issues in the session but so far nothing I can see as a problem for the weekend.”

One man who will return to the squad will be Armando Broja who could not play against his parent club last weekend.

“Broja on his best level is definitely a player that can help us but it’s important that he finds his way back to his best performances and this is the hope for the weekend.”

So it looks like Ralph has his entire squad to pick from this weekend and that has to be a help, there are certainly a player or two in the squad who did not perform to the level required last time out and that is an understatement.

Presuming Broja will play at the weekend I'd also be hoping that Lyanco, Tella, Perraud and Smallbone will be given opportunities as well. Let's face it, if they can improve on the performance of a team that lost 6-0 then there's little point in keeping them at the club. Above all Ralph needs to get his act together and stop playing a formation that consistently leaves us wide open in defence. And please, don't even think of playing McCarthy in goal, he is an unfortunate example of the squad mediocrity and preventing the progression of the young 'keepers already on the books.

It seems bonkers to think but I would actually be interested in a Valery-Lyanco partnership at the moment. Lyanco to do the roughy toughy fist pumpy stuff and Jan V to bring the ball out.

I think Tino needs a rest, so KWP and Perraud at full backs.

Redmond in for Mo E or even Stu A and please an end to the unbalanced shape that caused a lot of problems last week.

Romeu also looks a bit off the pace so start with Diallo.

Adam A still looks to be adjusting so I would start Tella and Che. Broja can be used as a sub.

Definitely agree with Highfield about making sure Ralph tightens us up defensively as we are so open, once we concede the ball it's embarrassing how outnumbered we are and then watch the panic set in.

Yep - Ralph and the players owe us one.
