Napoli Targeting Southampton Defender
Thursday, 5th May 2022 11:00

According to media reports in Italy, Napoli have Southampton in their sights as they assess their transfer targets in the summer, so will it be arrivederci from one of our defensive stalwarts.

According to Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Southampton central defender Jan Bednarek is on Napoli’s transfer radar ahead of the summer window.

The Gli Azzurri currently lie 3rd in Serie A this season, but are 7 points behind AC Milan with only 3 games to go, they are guaranteed a top 4 finish and next season are looking to go a little better.

They are currently renewing contracts of those players they want to keep, including current central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, but are looking to give themselves other options.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is in the process of compiling a list of potential transfer targets and Jan Bednarek is on that list.

The Polish player is still under contract for another 3 years, so Saints are in no rush to sell and could command a decent fee if he was to go.

There is some speculation surrounding Bednarek's future at St Mary's after Ralph Hasenhuttl intimated that he had had to leave Bednarek out of the FA Cup game against Manchester City because the players head was not in the right place.

This was strange, because things like this are usually kept in house, but the Austrian manager was clearly not happy with the situation.

Although he has been a mainstay of the side now for the last four seasons, this season has perhaps not been as good as the previous ones, could Saints as part of the new strategy going to be fine tuned under Sports Republik, be looking to offload him at a high price with a replacement already lined up.

This we will find out in the next few weeks, certainly if Bednarek stayed it would not be a disappointment, but if he were to go then he would not be as big a miss as when some those now Ex Saints in the central defensive position left.

Would definitely NOT be a big loss to our team.

I don't think he is the long term solution going forward, but I would definitely look to get rid of the likes of Stephens and if he is now classified as a CB, Valery, before him.
It also depends on whether the new owners will stump up the cash for a new CB - one that can organise the rest of the defence and help minimise the mistakes.
£20m and they can have him and we can find a decent partner for Salisu or Lyanco.

Despite the bad press, he's our most consistent stopper.

However, he isn't on a par with our great CB's of the past though. We also have a couple of good players coming through, Lyanco and Simeu in a year or two ,who are going to be looking for game time over the next few years.

Add to this the perennial unsated desire for an old experienced hand to show some leadership on the pitch.

Factor in the sarcastic claps to the fans a few weeks ago plus Ralph's comments and it would seem that he's already thinking about being elsewhere.

If a decent offer actually comes in, I think we will take it.

Can’t believe how much he’s getting slated on here , if ever theirs a unsung hero it’s him . Makes me laugh when us armchair managers think a players rubbish & next thing you know a team like Napoli want him .

I think I'm with landsdown on this one. True - Jan is not a club great CB but he has done a good job over the last few years. Maybe it is time for him to move on but only if he is properly replaced. I would prefer to see Jack Stephens go...

Landsdown and SanMarco - just an observation, but perhaps people's views were swayed by his inability to prevent Zaha from turning on the edge of the box to score an injury time winner last weekend ?

He’s been abysmal..
10 million snap their hands off.
Jack should start the last 2 games..
At least he has the desire for the shirt..
