The last time City won the League cup Final as it was simply called then was in 1976. City had started their cup run slowly but went on to reach final after a memorable victory against their red neighbours with the match ending in a fantastic 4-0 victory. In the same match Colin Bell suffered his career ending injury.
City beat Newcastle United 2-1 in an entertaining match at Wembley. Peter Barnes pounced from close range to give City the lead but Alan Gowling equalised 10 minutes before half-time with an opportunistic strike of his own inside the box.
But it was Dennis Tueart's effort that will be fondly remembered. His overhead kick just after half-time is one of Wembley's finest goals and proved to be the decider.
Let's hope we will all be celebrating again come sunday!!
