Return of the Mac!

Gary McAllister revealed that he would have been interested in succeeding Kevin Blackwell as Leeds boss.

Former Leeds skipper Gary McAllister revealed that he would have been interested in the Leeds job - 12 months ago.

Between 1990-1996, McAllister made 230 league starts for Leeds and scored 31 goals. He then moved on to Coventry, where eventually he ended up as player-manager after a spell with Liverpool.

Unfortunately Gary left his post at Coventry for personal reasons - in this instance caring for his terminally ill wife Denise, who sadly passed-away in March last year.

The YEP report today that Macca revealed: "If they'd come and asked me about the job then I'd have been interested, and I'd have listened.

"There was a lot of talk that I was going to get the job, and that I'd already got it, but the fact is we never spoke.

There were no talks with the club and no communication. They obviously had other plans and another target."

I remember just prior to Dennis Wise getting the job 12 months ago, certain sections of the media were convinced McAllister was heading back to ER along with Eric Black - his trusted assistant from his time in charge at Cov.

However, it was a bold statement to make as at the time, the worst kept secret in the world was that Dennis Wise was going to succeed Kevin Blackwell - the rest as they say is history.

From a fans perspective, if Macca had been asked and taken the job, it would have been a massive PR scoop for Ken Bates. Although certain people, including myself, were furious when he quit Leeds for Coventry in 1996 - time softens attitudes and he would have been welcome with open arms! Particularly as Messers Wise and Poyet had connections with a certain club in West London.

However, what a difference an unbeaten start to the season makes! We are a fickle bunch aren't we?
