Former midfielders move on
Former midfielders move on

Two former Dale midfielders have found themselves new clubs in League Two today with Alex Russell moving to Exeter and Lewis Montrose moving to Chesterfield.

Russell has headed to Exeter after a spell at Cheltenham. Despite only joining them in the Summer, he started well before being transfer listed when Martin Allen took over as manager at the Whaddon Road club.

However, he fought his way back into the starting line up and has been a regular pretty much for the past three months. Despite that, he's joined Exeter on loan for the rest of the season, with a view to a permanent transfer.

The move hasn't gone down well with Martin Allen, who describes the deal as being a cost cutting measure with finances dictating terms at Cheltenham right now.

Also on the move is former loan player Lewis Montrose. Wigan Athletic winger Montrose spent time at Spotland last season on loan without troubling the first team.

But he's moved on again this time to Chesterfield, who are delighted to secure his signature.

This move also has a Cheltenham connection after Montrose had a couple of loan spells at Town earlier this season.

Montrose will face Dale at the end of March when we visit Saltergate, whilst Russell will visit Spotland just three days later.
