Pompey back at their second home (Wembley) after Bury are buried
Tuesday, 26th Feb 2019 23:15 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey are off to Wembley - at least once.

It remains to be seen whether a trip to the national stadium will result if Pompey end up in the play-offs, but they will be there on the final day of March in the competition many fans love to hate, the Checkatrade.

They reached the final with a 3-0 win at Bury, with second half goals from Gareth Evans, Oli Hawkins and Ronan Curtis dumping Bury out at Gigg Lane.

Kenny Jackett selected his first choice side, a much stronger line-up than the one seen in previous rounds of the League Trophy, and it eventually paid off - though only after a fairly even first half when the Blues were not at their best.

Evans curled in a free-kick just past the hour after Ben Close had been fouled, then Evans crossed for Nathan Thompson to nod down for Hawkins to volley in the second. Curtis's fancy footwork and fierce finish made it safe at 3-0.

Pompey will face Sunderland or Bristol Rovers in the final, but will not know their opponents until next week.

The bad news of the night was an injury to central defender Christian Burgess near the end. The extent of it is not yet known.

Pompey: MacGillivray; Thompson, Burgess (Walkes 88), Clarke, Brown; Naylor, Close; Curtis, Evans (c), Solomon-Otabor (Lowe 46); Hawkins. Subs not used: Bass, Haunstrup, Donohue, Vaughan, Pitman

Referee: Ross Joyce

Attendance: 3,900 (452 Pompey fans)
