Oldham in the Pink for Leeds visit
Oldham in the Pink for Leeds visit

Oldham are reverting to a PINK kit for Monday night's clash with Leeds, but before we start taking the mickey, it is for a very, very good cause.

The Oldham Chronicle report that the Latics plan to use the visit of Leeds United on Monday, which is live on SKY to bring home awareness of breast cancer.

The game will coincide with a fundraising event for the new breast cancer unit at Oldham's Royal Victoria Hospital. John Sheridan's men have received permission from the League to revert to a "one-off" all-pink kit for one night only.

And the Latics have urged their fans to show their solidarity by turning up in pink too.

Sadly, breast cancer today (Thursday) claimed the life of the TV Actress Wendy Richard, 65. According to Cancer Research there are over 44,600 new cases recorded in the UK alone each year and one in three female cancer sufferers are effected by breast cancer.

I hope Leeds fans travelling to the game on Monday night will dig deep to support such a worthy cause and it would nice to think a gesture from the club will be forthcoming also.

Pink kits in football are a bit of a rariety, I seem to remember Juventus had a pink away kit a couple of years ago. I vividly remember Brighton experimented with pink during the 1989/90 season as an away kit and dared turn up in it at Leeds in December that year, which unfortunately in those hardened, homophobic times led to a butt of jokes particularly as Brighton had just emerged as the UK's "Gay Capital" and the club's sponsors back then were a firm called NOBO.

Nowadays the colour pink is more synonymous with Breast Cancer. All due respect must be paid to the Latics for their efforts and whilst I hope the pink kit does not prove to be a lucky omen for them come Monday night on the pitch, I hope they raise thousands for the Royal Victoria off it.
