Danny McDermid is the whistle blower appointed to take charge of the next game.

A 40 year old Civil Servant, McDermid is a rarity in that he has actually played the game.

Unfortunately, this does not mean that McDermid sees the game a player does.

14 games this season has seen 46 yellow cards and three red ones.

In the game Colchester v Plymouth in September, seven yellows were shown.

Then, earlier this month in the Bournemouth Hartlepool game, eight yellow cards were produced.

While it would suggest that these were two particularly dirty games, it sends out the message that yet another referee cannot keep proper control of matches.

Such prolific involvement by referees can only mar the entertainment value of games. The FA needs to reminf the officials that people go to watch the football. NOT the referee.

That is straying somewhat. What did Danny McDermid have to say when interviewed by Ref World?

How did you get introduced into refereeing?

During my playing days I was injured and not quite fit enough to play. At this time I still went along to support my team when they often asked if i would run the line for them which I did and started to enjoy. From there a referee called Max Hanlon suggested that I should do the referee's course which i did and the bug was officially started. 

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career so far has been when I was selected to become a National List Referee and did my first football league game at Peterborough Utd. v Bristol Rovers. 

What is the best game you have officiated and why?

This would have to be the Australia v Denmark international where I was the assistant referee. 

What are your aims as a National List Referee?

For one day to be able to referee 2 Premiership Clubs either in league or cup competition. 

What skills do you think you need to become a referee?

A thick skin to start. Be able to man manage difficult players/officials. Got to be fit and also be receptive to constructive criticism. 

Who has been the biggest influence in your career and why?

2 people really. Peter Foakes who was my coach and mentor during my days as a level 2 referee. The 2nd being Gary Willard who has been my coach and mentor during my time as a National List Referee. The reasons being that they have given me tremendous advice and helped me to develop into the referee I am today. 

In your opinion who is/was the best referee?

Howard Webb in my opinion has everything that a great referee needs in his locker. Great man management skills not only on the field of play but also off it. I hope one day that he will receive his just rewards in refereeing a major international cup final.

Hugh Dallas in my opinion was one of the best referee's of his time having watched him numerous times doing Celtic/Rangers games. He only ever got it wrong when Celtic lost!!!!

The appointed assistants are Mancunian Matt Bristow and former Ukranian professional player, Oleksandr Saliy.

The fourth official is Harry Lennard from East Sussex.
