Manager-less Scunthorpe
Manager-less Scunthorpe
Wednesday, 30th Mar 2011 11:10

Saturday afternoon sees Norwich City playing host to Scunthorpe United in a contest that, if it were to be played on paper, should finish in a handsome victory for Norwich City. Alas, Carrow Road has already proved to be vulnerable when so-called weak sides have visited.

Firmly embedded in the relegation zone with just eight games to avoid the drop, Scunthorpe chairman, Steve Wharton sacked manager Ian Baraclough in a bid to bring in somebody that can turn their fortunes around.

Suggestions that Brian Laws might make a return have been squashed, but the rumour mill is still touting West Ham coach, Paul Groves and Bury  manager, Alan Knill as the two front runners.

It is a situation that makes for a much harder game than when Norwich managed a one goal to nil victory at Glanford Park, back in August, 2010. This time the Scunthorpe players will be out to make an impression on the new manager.

If, as reports suggest, the new manager is appointed before Saturday, the players will probably get a talk from him prior to the game, although caretakers, Tony Daws and Ian Turnbull will have made all the decisions about Saturday's match. Regardless of a new manager or not, there are contracts and first team places up for grabs. And what better way to secure your ticket than to get one over on Championship surprise package, Norwich City?

There are real concerns for many Norwich supporters. The right messages seem to come from the dressing room before every home game. Alas, something goes missing once the weapons are drawn. Someone remarked that the players feel pressure from the home supporters expecting too much of them. Perhaps the players do try too hard.

Three points are very much up there on everybody's priority list, especially as games such as this one really ought to be in the bag.
