Derry and Helguson focus on positives as Terry race row deepens - Thursday diary

Despite Andre Villas Boas’ insistence that the John Terry race row was over on Tuesday, the argument shows no signs of going away with accusations and opinions flying left and right.

News

The FA has said that Terry will skipper England for the forthcoming friendlies against Spain and Sweden despite an ongoing investigation into his alleged racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road on Sunday. QPR meanwhile have strenuously denied today’s Daily Mail story that Paddy Kenny, Clint Hill and Shaun Derry will all give evidence against Terry to the FA. Given that Derry wasn’t even on the pitch at the time of the alleged incident that seems to be up to the Mail’s usual standards of reporting.

Terry said previously: “Anton and I spoke for ten minutes in the dressing room after the game and there is no issue between us,” but has apparently been unable to contact either Anton or Rio Ferdinand by phone this week. The incident gives England manager Fabio Capello a headache, as he may have liked to pair Terry and Rio Ferdinand in defence.

Former QPR striker Les Ferdinand has said Terry must be banned if found guilty. Ferdinand said: “If John Terry has said something he needs to come out and say it. If he hasn't, let's get it sorted and out of the way. I was asked to look at it on the internet and I've seen what's said — unfortunately you are not privy to the whole conversation. FA, Fifa and UEFA have been in positions where they have been able to stamp out a few problems which have reared their ugly heads in the last few years and they haven't done so or they haven't done it diligently enough. When you look at the punishments dished out, it lets you know these people don't think there is a racist problem in football. They need to make a statement. That means bans instead of fines – that's the only way it's going to work.”

The row has rather overshadowed a famous QPR victory, one that veteran midfielder Shaun Derry is keen to relish. Derry has enjoyed a wonderful Indian summer at QPR along with defender Clint Hill, both free transfer signings from Crystal Palace at the start of last season. He the Fulham Chronicle: “I respect football too much to speak down about places I’ve been to in the past but I look around now and realise the level I’ve come to – and it does give you a lift. I knew I would only be a part of the Premier League if I went up with a club who got promotion. It was only two years ago me and Clint Hill were trying to save Crystal Palace from League One. There’s a bond with me and Clint, and we caught each others looks in the changing room after beating Chelsea.”

Goalscorer Heidar Helguson told the London24: “More important than me scoring was us getting the win because we really needed a home win, it’s been a while. is good that it came against them because we are going into a tough run of games now, so to win the first one was great. I thought we were more comfortable when it was 11 against 11, it didn’t seem it make it any easier for us when they went down to nine men and I don’t know why that was, it’s just one of those things.”

Elsewhere Sky Sports reports that clubs are starting to sniff around Fitz Hall. The defender’s contract is up at the end of the season and according to Sky, in a report that looks suspiciously like it came from the player’s agent or somebody who has never seen him play for QPR, Rangers could be set to lose the centre half on a free transfer.

Finally two links for interesting interviews that you should pay attention to if you have time. The QPR Norwegian website grabbed assistant manager Mick Jones for a chat after the Chelsea game which can be listened to here.

Amongst discussion about the Chelsea game and current state of the club Jones said: “If the previous owners were still here we’d have been gone within six weeks. We couldn’t work for them, there wasn’t any harmony, we were being told what to do. We came to the club because of the Bhatia family and for the first seven months we dealt with them and it was great. But then the owners came back in, it turned around, and we knew we weren’t going to be able to make the decisions we wanted to make.”

And QPRnet has spoken to former chaiman Chris Wright in what I believe is his first in depth interview on his controversial spell at Loftus Road. Click here for more.

Loan Watch

Dagenham and Redbridge are mulling over whether or not to extent Troy Hewitt’s loan spell in east London. Hewitt hasn’t scored in two starts and three sub appearances as the Daggers continue to struggle in League Two but manager John Still told London24 he is considering retaining the former Harrow Borough man for another month.

Still said: “We may well keep Troy, we’ll have to look at that. It’s been difficult for him, because he came to play with Sam Williams – big man, little man – so losing Sam smacked us right in the face and has done us no good. We’ll look at it.”

Hewitt started on Tuesday night as the Daggers lost 3-1 at high flying Crawley for whom Michael Doughty was an unused substitute. Doughty admitted through Twitter that he was disappointed not to be getting more minutes for Steve Evans’ men but said he was willing to be patient and congratulated his team on the result.

Dagenham are being kept out of the relegation zone by Barnet’s poor form. They lost 3-0 at home to Southend on Tuesday night with Gary Borrowdale completing a full 90 minutes at left back. The LoftforWords team is taking advantage of a Saturday off to go and see the Bees against Burton Albion this weekend.

Barnet manager Lawrie Sanchez, speaking about his club’s transfer prospects, said this week: “The other option is to get a more experienced player who, for one reason or another, are not getting games like Gary Borrowdale. Now the problem with that is trying to afford their wages. The wage-bill here is not fantastic and £1,000 in football does not go very far for an experienced player. Gary is only here because QPR have literally done us a favour. So we now need to see if any other clubs will do that for us by maybe perhaps letting us take a player who is not getting games or who is returning from injury.”

Elsewhere Peter Ramage returned to the Crystal Palace starting line up on Tuesday night as the Eagles kept up their impressive start to the season with a League Cup win at home to Championship leaders Southampton. Late goals from Darren Ambrose and Jermaine Easter sealed a 2-0 win which moves Palace into the quarter finals.

In League One this week Max Ehmer completed another 90 minutes for struggling Yeovil as they drew 2-2 at home to Orient, a result which keeps them bottom of the table. Wycombe are second bottom after they lost 2-1 at home to Charlton, Martin Rowlands was injured and unavailable. Sheffield United moved into the play off places at the expense of MK Dons after beating Karl Robinson’s men 2-1 at Bramall Lane - Angelo Balanta played the final 20 minutes.

Former R’s

Former QPR striker and current Spurs coach Clive Allen is relishing the first competitive meeting of the two clubs in 15 year this Sunday.

Speaking to London24 the graduate of the QPR youth set up said: “Other than Tottenham, QPR are the club who are closest to my heart. My dad was the manager there and that’s where I started my career. I’ve got a very big soft spot for QPR, it’s a second home for me. QPR are always one of the first results I look out for. I have to say that they were out of the top flight for too long, so it’s good to see them back. Now, with their financial position, things look rosy and hopefully they can have a good season.

“I know Adel very well. I’ve seen him at his brilliant best and I also had to deal with him when he was at his worst. He can be a world-beater, and he can also be the most frustrating player to play with and work with. He is that type. There was a lot of discussion amongst the staff here when he left. We’d had him for a few years, and Adel wanted the chance to play regular first-team football. That wasn’t going to happen for him at the time with us, but he’s taken his chance at QPR. He’s an incredible talent, there’s no doubt about that, and he harnessed a lot of that talent in the Championship last season – he showed what he’s capable of. The biggest challenge he has now is to see if he can produce that consistently in the Premier League. That’s going to be the big test for him.”

Elsewhere Daniel Nardiello’s hot streak continues for Exeter as the one-time Man Utd striker tries to fire the Grecians away from the League One drop zone single handedly. Nardiello scored twice in a 2-1 win at Walsall on Tuesday night, his third and forth goals in two games. He now has seven for the season.

Simon Walton was on the scoresheet on Tuesday as well, but his penalty wasn’t enough to stop Plymouth slipping to a 5-1 defeat at Oxford.

- Chelsea's hopes of relocating from Stamford Bridge took a knock today when the group of supporters who bought up the land Stamford Bridge sits on to protect it from property developers refused the club's request to buy it back from them. Approval was needed from 75% of supporters and only 61.5% was achieved. Chairman Bruce Buck last week told supporters ticket prices would continue to rise if the club could not move to a bigger stadium.

- Arsenal are confident of keeping leading scorer Robin Van Persie at the club beyond the end of his current contract in 2013. The club is talking to the Dutchman about extending his deal and manager Arsene Wenger said: "He has 18 months to go and I'm confident he'll sign a new deal. I'm always confident." Van Persie has nine goals in 13 games so far this season.

- Aston Villa manager Peter Grant has defended full back Alan Hutton after his x-rated challenge on Shane Long at the weekend left the West Brom striker facing six weeks on the sidelines. Grant, who once snapped Paul Murray's leg during a match between QPR and Norwich said: "People haven't said in the past that Alan is aggressive, goes over the ball and is a dirty full-back. I think his biggest problem sometimes is that he's desperate to hit the ground running in games. There's that impatience in his game." - Man City manager Roberto Mancini says winger Andy Johnson must improve his work rate if he is to play regular first team football. Johnson scored as City dumped Wolves out of the League Cup on Wednesday. Mancini said afterwards: "Sometimes he thinks, 'OK, in this game I scored one goal, I did an assist, that is enough'. But he needs to think, 'I scored one goal, I did one assist, I should continue because I want to score another goal and another assist, and run back to defend'."

- Stoke striker Mamdy Sidibe required oxygen and was stretched off during a reserve match against Port Vale earlier this week. Sidibe, who has played just 40 minutes of football since August 2010 because of a knee injury, seemed to suffer a recurrence in the second half after scoring in the first.
