Buckley signs for Watford

The speculation of the last few days proved to be correct, with the confirmation of Will Buckley's transfer to Championship side Watford.

The fee goes down as "undisclosed" which gives us all an opportunity to speculate the fee was whatever we want it to be.

The fee is certainly a six figure sum, and is believed to be the sort of deal that could eventually reach the funds received for the likes of Grant Holt, but the word eventually should not be ignored in that respect. In addition, it is expected that a sell on clause of 25% will have been included in the deal.

Watford have had a longstanding interest in Buckley, and there were suggestions that a deal was close to being reached a few weeks ago, before Watford were hit with a financial bomb with the news that owner Jimmy Russo was pulling out.

Thankfully, the Hornets were saved following the intervention of long time supporter Lord Ashcroft, and their financial stability was strengthened this week when they were loaned £500,000 by one of their directors which has contributed towards their purchase of Buckley.

Whilst inevitably there will be some feeling that we didn't get enough money for Buckley, and there's no doubting that some of his performances have been priceless, it is worth noting that Buckley is out on contract at the end of the season.

An out of contract transfer would have seen any sale go to a tribunal, which is always a bit of a lottery. Furthermore, there had been reports linking Buckley with a move to Scottish side Motherwell. Such a move would have seen Buckley leave on a free transfer.
