Luton Just Too Good For Sorry Swans

Home >Story Index> Luton 3 Swansea 0

Swansea made just one change from the side that beat Darlington in midweek, with Neil Sharp coming in for his league debut in place of the suspended Kristian O'Leary.

As predicted last night, chairman Tony Petty did not appear at the game although both John Shuttleworth and Mike Lewis were in attendance as the fans protested against Petty verbally again. Lewis was seen to move his head towards the Swansea crowd on one shout of "Lewis you're a w " but did not seem at all phased by the hatred from the stand towards him.
Luton made most of the early running in the game and were well in control when they took the lead, ironically from one of Swansea's few ventures into the opposition half. A throw near the corner flag was easily cleared by the Luton defence and a ball sent Dean Crowe away. Gareth Phillips was woefully short on pace as he tried to catch Crowe and despite Roger narrowing the angle, Crowe put Luton one up.
A couple of minutes later, Crowe should have doubled the lead but faced with another one on one shot wide of the goal to the relief of the Swansea fans. Luton were still producing all the running in the game and it was somewhat of a miscarriage of justice that they led by just one goal at the break.
But sometimes, failing to take chances can cost you dear and Addison replaced Casey with Watkin at half-time in an attempt to try and change the balance of play. But it failed as Luton searched for the second and killer goal.
It came when Michael Howard was caught away from his near post position leaving Perrett to steer it into that position and despite a brave dive from Roger, Luton were 2 up. Less than Six minutes later, the score was 3-0. Sharp bought down Forbes on the edge of the area and the free-kick was played back and then across for the unmarked Forbes to head into an empty net.
The only bright spot in Swansea's afternoon was the return of Jason Smith who made two solid challenges and with some luck he will add the stability that is so lacking in our defence at the moment.
Very easy to be very critical today with the scoreline but make no mistake Luton are a quality side and if you can get odds against them being promoted this season, take them. They are the best side I have seen us play so far and it wouldn't surprise me if they go on to take the championship.
We still have problems, and with our only real creator winning man of the match for Wycombe today, Addison and Nicholas are left with a few problems ahead of them.
As it stands we are one point off the bottom of the football league tonight, desperately seeking some kind of form.
