Pub Guide - Churchill Arms
Pub Guide - Churchill Arms
Sunday, 4th Apr 2004 22:10

If you're looking a little further afield, possibly after work before a midweek game, then Don Samioni has a recommendation for you in the Notting Hill area of town.

Reviewer - Don Samioni
Name of pub -Churchill Arms
Location - Notting Hill, Kensington Church Street.
Size -Small to medium.
Selection of beers - Fullers plus the normal range of lagers. On the rare occasion I've drunk Guinness it's been excellent (Landlord is Irish, so I guess that may be a factor).
Price of drinks - Haven't really noticed - but I'm guessing on the high side of average.
How full does it get on a matchday?Always pretty busy, but not usually uncomfortable (matchday not a factor).
Fitness of bar staff -Well, a fair sprinkling of young Aussie ladies - but the thing is, regardless of physical attributes, for some reason I can't seem to be attracted to females from down under. I've tried, but it just doesn't happen.
How long does it take to walk to the ground from there? Tube / Bus is 5/10 minutes to Shepherds Bush; then a 5/10 minute walk.
Sky Sports? - Yes, but not on 'large screens', just a subtle presence above one of the doors.
Suitable for away fans? Yes, I suppose so - wouldn't really call it a typical pub for any football fan
Suitable for families and kids? No, and all the better for it.
What's the smoking situation? People smoke - average rating on the smog-o-meter.
Beer garden - What a great question - don't know (but guess not).
As far as pub toilets go, just how bad are these? Average.
Does it serve food? Yes.
If so, is the food any good? A fine range of Thai cuisine.
Trendy modern bar, traditional pub or somewhere in between? Apart from the Thai food, very much traditional.
In one sentence why should people visit/steer clear of this pub? Relaxed, cosmopolitan atmosphere - a chance to observe the beautiful people…(hmmm) Jovial landlord. On the negative side, bar staff sometimes take their eye off the ball; being more interested in chatting than serving beer.
Anything else to add? Not a typical choice for a pre-match pub - not least because of its location. However, for midweek matches, when the 4 or 5 of us who link up can (through outrageous stealth) be available from 3 or 4pm, it's a great central meet up point. The pub does cater for 'sport', but the focus (as you'll see from the memorabilia on the walls) is on rugby union and Gaelic football (something to consider if you are hoping to catch a Association footy game - it's not necessarily going to be the priority). For Saturday, it's always going to be one of the usual suspects nearer the ground - but as an alternative, on a cold Tuesday night, give it a go some time is my advice.
