Saints At Leicester City ! Dan's Report
Monday, 4th Apr 2016 10:30

It was the “fantastic foxes” who came out on top on Sunday’s vital clash between Leicester and the Saints in the title race and aim to finish in the European qualification places.

Saints fans were delighted to see Jay Rodriguez back in the match-day squad after four months out injured plus the return of January signing, Charlie Austin. The ex-Burnley strikers started on the bench.

Southampton’s start wasn’t great as Leicester piled pressure on the visitors early on by dominating possession, mainly in the final third, but didn’t score from the Saints’ weak start.

20 minutes into the game and Southampton looked more comfortable and started to become the dominating team by passing the ball around and attacking into the final third.

The best chance of the game came when Sadio Mane got onto the end of a fantastic through ball that left him one on one with Leicester keeper, Schmeicel but the Senegalese tried to go around the keeper instead of shooting early. Once he got around the Danish goalie, Foxes defender, Danny Simpson had come to the rescue by blocking Mane’s shot with his arm, a penalty shout that didn’t go our way for the third game running

Saints skipper, Jose Fonte got an unexpected shot off after Mane’s attempt from outside of the box, which Schmeicel had to get his fingertips to.

But seven minutes from half-time saw a fantastic cross from Leicester’s Fuchs to skipper, Wes Morgan to head home his first goal of the season, 1-0 at half time.

Sadio Mane would’ve been kicking himself with the glorious chance he had in the first half because chances in the second didn’t seem to go Southampton’s way.

By the end of the second minute Victor Wanyama had already gotten himself in trouble. A poor touch from the Kenyan lead to Jamie Vardy’s pace knicking the ball and sprinting towards goal. Wanyama made a tackle that had Saint fans’ hearts in mouths as they all thought he would be the first player in Premier League history to be sent off four times in the same season, luckily it was a yellow.

Leicester went forwards four times into the final-third in the second-half, looking like they would score each time (familiar to the Liverpool game). Two heart-stopping moment for Saints fans saw big-man, Fraser Forster make two world-class saves.

The first came when Saints skipper, Jose Fonte, attempted to clear the ball over the cross-bar but it looked like it would fall into the top corner however Forster managed to keep it out. The next came later after a pass to Danny Simpson who only had to pass the ball into the goal to score passed it into the goal, but closer to Forster who parried the shot.

Saints continued to dominate possession throughout the final 20 minutes of the match but didn’t seem to record a shot on target.

In the final minutes a cross to Graziano Pelle from substitute, Charlie Austin was blocked by the palm of Robert Huth’s hand, another penalty shout.

Like they have done in their last three matches, the Foxes managed to hold on and scrape a 1-0 victory in a disappointing match for the Saints who will definitely feel that recent referees have been against them in making crucial decisions. But if we had to lose to anyone for me it would be Leicester and I think most football fans will agree with me when I say, I want Leicester to win the league.

Far from fantastic foxes, the most average team performance I've seen for a long time aided by blind officials.
3 points dropped.

Enjoyed watching this in my local. I thought the Foxes were charmed, that Rainieri was charming and Danny Simpson charmless but not armless ;-)

Always disappointing when you play well and lose.

I think 7th is probably it for this season. Fingers crossed we stay good now and everyone else falls apart though.
