Forward combinations give Pompey boss plenty to think about

Kenny Jackett is not one to get carried away after a victory. And he's the same after a defeat.

So after the 2-1 loss at Oxford - Pompey's second nil-pointer in successive weekends - Jackett was frustrated but not angry. He was acknowleding the need for action, but not panicking.

Pompey remain top of League One but their advantage over Luton is now only a point - it was five not so long ago.

Brett Pitman's superb bicycle kick finish was not enough to salvage a point after a poor first half in which Cameron Brannagan and James Henry put Oxford in command.

Jackett told the club website: 'We competed well in the first half and didn’t give Oxford too much, although we were lacking in scoring opportunities. But we’ve had games like that this season — particularly in the first half — and got to the break without conceding.

'Their first goal had some quality, but we had long enough to be able to clear the second and should have done better. We got one back following good work from Louis and Brett, but there was still a lack of clear-cut chances after that.

'I don’t think we really did enough with our possession and couldn’t quite find that incisive pass to trouble them. We haven’t had too many troubles defensively in the past two games, but our combinations up front are obviously something we need to work on.'

Pompey are likely to make numerous changes for the Checkatrade Trophy tie with Peterborough on Tuesday night. They then face QPR in the FA Cup at Fratton on Saturday.

Next up in the league it's the small matter of a trip to Luton on Tuesday week.
