Bates began his career at Coventry making just one sub appearance for the Sky Blues. After leaving his hometown club, he descended into non league football, playing for Leamington.

He was released from his contract in March 2007 and allowed to sign non contract terms with Dale in a bid to win himself a contract.

Whilst with Dale, he made just two substitute appearances totalling thirty seven minutes on the pitch. His appearance at Peterboro saw Dale score twice pretty much as soon as he came on, so he must have had some sort of impact.

However, it wasn't enough to secure him a longer deal at Spotland, and he was released at the end of the 2006-7 season.
