Whatever Happened To... Gavin Johnson

After nearly six years with the U's, Johnson was released at the end of the 2004-05 season, despite having arguably his best season at the club.

He initially had a spell at Boston United at the start of the 2005-06 season, making four appearances, but then moved to Northampton Town at the end of August on a free transfer. He was part of the side which finished second in League Two, making 26 appearances and scoring one goal, but was released by the Cobblers after just one season.

After leaving Sixfields, he signed for Oxford United following a pre-season trial. Oxford just missed out on promotion back to the Football League, losing in the conference play-offs, and he was released at the end of the season, having made 35 appearances scoring 2 goals.

Due to family commitments and not wanting to travel too far for his football, he opted to join Bury Town in August 2007 over offers from higher profile clubs. He spent three seasons at Rams Meadow, culminating in Bury winning the league championship in 2009-10. With Bury joining the national league, he left them, again due to family commitments.

Last season he played for Walsham Le Willows in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division. Now, aged 41, he plays for Needham Market in the Isthmian League Division One North.

Clubs since leaving the U's: Boston United, Northampton Town, Oxford United, Bury Town, Walsham Le Willows, Needham Market.
