The events surrounding the departure of Jan Poortvliet desreve coverage in a "Carry On" film rather than Match Of The Day and although Poortvliet's sacking, and it was a sacking cams as a surprise given the timing, it wasnt unexpected given Lowe's track record when things have gone wrong as Stuart Gray, Steve Wigley and Paul Sturrrock will testify.
So why did they wait until the Friday to get rid of him, the crisis meeting on Tuesday would have been an ideal time and would have also given Wotte a whole week to work with the team, in short it doesnt make sense,the only logical reason being that by doing it on Friday night on a weekend with no game, it gives them a few days for the frenzy to die down. However if this was the reason, why have the meeting earlier in the week at all and why allow Poortvliet to talk to the press about being up for the fight, surely for his dignity it should have been handled far differently.
But perhaps the real reason for the events of the week are that Lowe has something up his sleeve, and could that be Glenn Hoddle, it would certainly appeal to Lowe to appoing Hoddle and save the Club from the drop as it would appeal to Hoddle himself.
Money would of course be a factor, however a short term contract to the end of the season would not be that expensive and the carrot of a full time deal might encourage the ex Saints & Spurs boss to do it for a reduced fee.
Would it still be affordable, well it might not be as expensive as some might think, and Lowe might be able to swing it with the bank using increased crowds and revenue as the justification.
Will it happen ? who knows, but what we do know about Lowe is that he is a man who takes action when the chips are down, histor shows that action isnt always the right course, but he rarely sits on his hands and does nothing.
Will it placate the fans ? probably not to any great degree, but Lowe will feel that it is a step in the right direction and it would certainly take the sting out of planned protests.
What Lowe will know though is that results are the only barometer that most fans use, if whoever is in charge at Saints for the rest of the year keeps Saints up, then the fans will lessen their protest, however this might have been the case a few years back, Lowe was unpopular in 1999, but there werent many dissenters come 2003, but has he used up all his good will with Saints fans, I fear that might be the case.
