Another Blues loss but boss keeps his chin up

Pompey boss Andy Awford remains upbeat despite a couple of poor goals conceded in the Blues' latest pre-season game - a 3-2 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Awford's men at least fought back from 3-0 down to give fans something to shout about with only just over a week to go until the League Two season kicks off.

The manager told The News: 'If you take the two comical goals out of it, which I am sure we agree they were, lots of it was good, even in the first half. I thought there was some really good stuff, we are starting to get better fitness levels, we can see that, and are beginning to get there.

‘We have been beaten but that’s not what it is about, it is more about the performance and making sure the players learn. I know it sounds silly but I actually thought we played alright in the first half, it was loads better than Ebbsfleet.

‘Forget the cross and the headed goal for the second, if you take the other two goals out of it there wasn’t a lot in it. Bournemouth have had a lot of the ball, which we knew they would because they are a very good side, they are a Championship side and play-off contenders who I think will be right in there.

‘But we have caused them problems in the first half and second half and I am pleased with that. There were lots of positives to take, Bournemouth are a top-10 team in the Championship, they will go really close this year. Overall I am pleased — but there is that tinge of disappointment with the individuals errors that we made.’

Pompey face Charlton at Fratton on Saturday (3pm) in their final first-team friendly.
